Liberty Depends on You

November 5, 2012

The Foundation

"Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual -- or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country." --Samuel Adams

Liberty Depends on You

Tomorrow, Nov. 6, 2012, Americans will go to the polls to cast votes for our elected leaders -- everything from county commissioner and state legislators, to U.S. congressmen, and, of course, the president of the United States. It is A Time for Choosing1, but also a Tipping Point2. Will voters choose to continue on the road to socialism and the rule of men, or will they vote for a new course -- one of Liberty and Rule of Law?

The part we play in this battle for Liberty is significant. And we don't mean just the editors, staff and Advisory Board of The Patriot Post, but, more important, YOU, our faithful readers. Without you, what we do would be impossible, as would keeping the flame of Liberty burning bright.

Therefore, we humbly ask that as part of the final election push you consider giving a gift to The Patriot Post3.

"I am an active duty Chief Warrant Officer 3 in the U.S. Army. I tend to donate to The Patriot Post during these drives, but when I saw the email for this drive I thought: 'This year I chose to donate to Romney's campaign. I chose that cause over The Patriot due to the importance of making sure he had the resources to win the White House. I'll donate to The Patriot next year.' Then it hit me that the choice should not be between Romney and The Patriot, but between those two noble causes and some random purchase I can do without. Without The Patriot Post, quality candidates like Romney may not have the chance to compete. Keep up the good work!" --Jim

Like many mission-based organizations, we typically raise most of our budget in the last two months of each year. To keep these great resources coming to your inbox, we still must raise $327,600 before year's end. Please keep in mind that, knowing the importance of this election and taking account of a struggling economy, we did not increase our budget this year.

Please, if you have the ability, take a moment to support us online3 today by making a contribution. If you prefer to support us by mail, please send your donation with our printable donor form4.

Political Futures

"As should be painfully obvious, an awful lot of people pulled the level for Obama in 2008 because they were tired of Republicans; because they were bored by the wars; because they didn't like McCain or Palin, or both; because Obama seemed optimistic and reasonable; because the financial crisis hit in September; because they didn't listen to a word the Democratic candidate said but were nonetheless convinced by the vapid 'hope and change' stuff and the (always empty) promise to rise above 'politics'; and, yes, because he was black. ... One of Obama's biggest mistakes -- perhaps his biggest mistake -- was to conclude that he had a mandate for his brand of progressive change. He did not. The Obama campaign was always, in fact was deliberately, divorced from his politics. A smarter, less egotistical man would have realized as much. Obama did not. ... The Left likes to explain away the failure of the last four years with vague charges of 'Republican obstructionism,' but this explains neither the continuing liability of the still-unpopular Obamacare nor the real damage to himself that the president did while he enjoyed majorities in both the House and the Senate. Republican 'obstructionism,' remember, was only made possible by the 2010 'shellacking,' which was the product of the Democrats' running riot for two years." --columnist Charles C. W. Cooke5

Government

"If you agree with Barack Obama's view of the future -- more federal involvement (read: control) over more areas of your life; and regulating economic success and redistributing wealth by confiscating the earnings of those who have been successful, then you should vote for Barack Obama. If you believe that the success of a federal program should be measured by the amount of money put in, not the value of the results, then you should vote for Barack Obama. If you believe that the federal government should make you whole for a reversal or failure of any kind, whether or not the product of your own decisions, or forces beyond your control -- and I'm not talking about major man-made or natural disasters -- then you should vote for Barack Obama. If you believe that the real enemies of human kind are oil and natural gas and that the federal government should continue to subsidize so-called alternative energy sources in spite of the evidence that there is no economic reason to do so, then you should vote for Barack Obama. If you believe that an increasingly shrinking group of people around the President are having an increasingly growing influence over all sectors of the Executive Branch and that Department heads being answerable to Congress is an outdated concept, then you should vote for Barack Obama. Similarly, if you believe that the Congress itself is an outdated concept; that the President should be able to dictate to the Congress and to the Supreme Court what he wants them to do (with the word 'dictate' here used advisedly) rather than adhere to the Constitutional principle that there are three co-equal branches of government, then you should vote for Barack Obama. If you believe that ceding influence over international events to the Russians, the Chinese and/or the European Union then you should vote for Barack Obama. If you believe that national policy should be set by an amalgam of Hollywood actors, environmental extremists, and public union bosses, then you should vote for Barack Obama." --columnist Rich Galen6

For the Record

"If you watched the media, you would think Romney is a greedy elitist. However, the three recent presidential debates showed the Republican presidential candidate to be a man passionately concerned about the future of America, and determined to do something about it. ... Forbes estimates Romney would be worth around $2 billion if he had stayed at Bain Capital rather than run for office. Romney decided to leave his thriving private-equity firm Bain in 1999 to rescue the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. He went on to pursue a political career that led him to the governorship of Massachusetts and now the GOP presidential nomination. And while Romney is today worth an estimated $230 million, it is indisputable he could have accumulated a far greater fortune had he not left Bain. Forbes calculates that had he remained at Bain, Romney's stake in the company would be worth $1.5 billion today. ... That amazing sacrifice shows Mitt Romney is clearly on a mission, and that is to make America stronger." --Newsmax' CEO Christopher Ruddy7

Re: The Left

"The Democrats spent six months painting Romney as a wealthy robot who didn't concern himself with the plight of others, but all Romney had to do in the first debate was to speak honestly without having his words filtered through the liberal media. Once he did that, the voters got to see a man who was decent, compassionate and, best of all, ready and able to restore America's greatness. On the other hand, the Obama they saw was the one that the rest of us had seen since Day One: an arrogant, lazy, narcissistic, incompetent, who wanted nothing less than to radically transform America in his own socialistic image." --columnist Burt Prelutsky8

Insight

"How do we know at what point the character of a people weakens? When they give over to government those duties which they should be pleased to perform themselves. When they are told they will be fed and sheltered even when they won't work, when they are promised security from the cradle to the grave, when they are told the state will take over the supervision of their children and say what schooling they should receive and where. When they are told all these things and supinely accept them." --author Janet Miriam Taylor Caldwell (1900-1985)

Opinion in Brief

"Wisconsin has voted Democratic in six consecutive presidential elections. Although George W. Bush lost there by just 0.2 and 0.4 percentages in 2000 and 2004, respectively, Obama won it by 13.9 points. If Romney wins Wisconsin, one reason will be native son Paul Ryan, but another will be the unsuccessful attempt by government employees' unions to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker. ... Pennsylvania, which has supported five consecutive Democratic candidates, has the fourth-highest percentage of its population over 65 (behind Florida, West Virginia and Maine). If Romney wins Pennsylvania, or even comes close (in 2008, Obama won by 10.3 points), this will indicate seniors' skepticism about Democrats' contention that Republicans offer the elderly only wheelchairs, and only for the purpose of rolling grandmothers off cliffs." --columnist George Will9

Culture

"I'd like to ask people who approve of Obama's performance, 'What has President Obama done during the past four years that you'd like to see more of in the next four years?' ... Blacks are chief executives of major cities, such as Philadelphia, Detroit, Washington, Memphis, Atlanta, Baltimore, New Orleans, Oakland, Newark, Cleveland and Cincinnati. In most of these cities, the chief of police, the superintendent of schools and other high executives are black. But in these cities, black people, like no other sector of our population, suffer from the highest rates of homicides, assaults, robberies and shootings. Black high-school dropout rates in these cities are the highest in the nation. ... Last year, in reference to President Obama's failed employment policies and high unemployment among blacks, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., who is chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said, 'If Bill Clinton had been in the White House and had failed to address this problem, we probably would be marching on the White House.' That's a vision that seems to explain black tolerance for failed politicians -- namely, if it's a black politician whose policies are ineffectual and possibly harmful to the masses of the black community, it's tolerable, but it's entirely unacceptable if the politician is white. Black people would not accept excuses upon excuses and vote to re-elect decade after decade any white politician, especially a Republican politician, to office who had the failed records of our big-city mayors. What that suggests about black people is not very flattering." --economist Walter E. Williams10

Essential Liberty

"In 1980 the question 'are you better off' swept Ronald Reagan into office and put America on a path to unprecedented growth and prosperity. This fall Mr. Romney has been asking the same question in expectation of similar results, but considering the current state of both domestic and global affairs a more appropriate query would be: Is America better off? Any quick and reasonable look would suggest that America is not. A deep and thorough analysis would confirm that America is standing one step away from the abyss of failure; one election away from an inevitable economic, cultural, and constitutional collapse. In the upcoming election the choice is clear: America can stumble forward to its demise with Mr. Obama or Americans can step up with Mr. Romney. ... Step up and stop Mr. Obama's fundamental transformation of America. Indeed, this Nov. 6th, Americans regardless of their percentage of circumstance can proudly step up with Mr. Romney and Pay Forward ... America's Greatness. It would only be Fair." --columnist Champ Webb11

The Gipper

"Tuesday all of you will go to the polls, will stand there in the polling place and make a decision. I think when you make that decision, it might be well if you would ask yourself, are you better off than you were four years ago? Is it easier for you to go and buy things in the stores than it was four years ago? Is there more or less unemployment in the country than there was four years ago? Is America as respected throughout the world as it was? Do you feel that our security is as safe, that we're as strong as we were four years ago? And if you answer all of those questions yes, why then, I think your choice is very obvious as to whom you will vote for. If you don't agree, if you don't think that this course that we've been on for the last four years is what you would like to see us follow for the next four, then I could suggest another choice that you have." --Ronald Reagan12
