Title: Microsoft error popping up when I come HERE Post by: ibTina on August 15, 2006, 08:26:47 AM I am using my husbands computer because when I tried to come here to the forum.. I kept getting that microsoft error report window. And it only happens when I try to open up this forum, no where else on the Internet. This happened just now... Any ideas what might be wrong?

I had the same trouble with my laptop and older versions of XP. Seems there is on "cure" for it, and I downloaded every single update and current versions of this and that......nothing helped. I finally downloaded Mozilla FireFox. It is a free browser that solved the problem. A little more detail on the error message would be needed to properly diagnose it. Placing a bandaid on the problem is just that. And depending on the actual issue that you are receiving it could be indicative of a larger issue that is going on and will crop up again, but next time maybe even worse. Initially I would recommend backing up any data you do not want lost (easy to drop it on another drive if you have it, burn to disc, etc). Then try and give exactly what error is and what it says. Along with OS version information. Forums work with scripts, and I think that the specific ones CU uses are PHP and PERL. In Internet Explorer, I think that you have to list a site as trusted in your IE configuration before IE will allow scripts to run. This might or might not be the problem, but I did require trusted sites when I used IE in the past. It might also have to do with whether you have scripts authorized at all in IE, and there are various levels of security that you can set for the different classifications of sites (i.e. Internet, Trusted, Local Area Network, and Restricted). Whatever classification CU falls in must allow scripts to run. This would be my first guess. A second guess would involve having CU configured in IE to accept cookies. If your browser won't allow a cookie to be set by CU, CU doesn't work. Cookies are used to identify you as authorized to use CU. It's basically a very simple cookie that says you are a member and are authorized to post and use CU. Many people are afraid of cookies and scripts, but they are absolutely necessary on sites where you established an account to gain access to all of the services. There are small utility programs that you can use to see what's in a cookie, and the only ones considered bad are those that track and record you around the Internet. The CU cookie is completely safe and doesn't do that. The scripts I'm talking about are run on CU and they make CU and most other forums work. You authorizing scripts for CU is simply you giving yourself the ability to give commands to the software on CU. Again, there is nothing dangerous about the scripts on CU. They simply provide an interface so that you can interact with the forum software. In fact, I've never found anything dangerous on CU. In short, I think that Christians Unite is one of the safest sites on the Internet. I have no problem at all in listing it as a "trusted site" because it is one. I must add that I know our Administrator has provided considerable security that is much great than needed for our users and the private information of our users. Hackers did crash Christians Unite in 2003, but that only involved damage to Christians Unite - NOT the users. MUCH more hardware and software security has been added since then.
