FACING THE PAST

Lord, I need to find some relief,
Come with me please, to visit my grief.
Show me how to deal with the sorrow,
So there will be joy in all my tomorrows.

How do I go backward from bitterness,
To find how to give forgiveness?
I’ve carried bitterness so long,
It’s deep in me and very strong.

If I go back, will I be depressed,
With it hard to find any rest?
I fear it will take much time,
To forgive others for their crime.

Around my heart is a wall,
I built it large, not at all small.
It’s there for my protection,
So I won’t have to feel the rejection.

In it I keep my possessions,
There’s resentment in my collection.
Hurt and anger are also there,
To give them up, doesn’t seem fair.

I hold them tight and close to me,
We’re all one part, don’t you see?
They comprise my comfort zone,
To help me from feeling all alone.

This journey You want me to travel;
I don’t know if it; I can handle.
So unfamiliar will be the ground,
And it could take many times around.

I know You want me to forgive,
To come follow You and live.
Will you please hold onto my hand?
On my own, I don’t think I can stand.

I think my poem here fits in well with Blackeyedpeas' bible study today.
When I wrote it I was really struggling with how to forgive others and in particular my own mother.  Our relationship has always been strained, but I truly wanted to forgive.  Maybe more for myself because I was eaten up with bitterness, but also because I knew God wanted me to.  It was a very hard thing for me to go through because no matter how hard and often I prayed, the feelings of anger stayed with me.  It actually took a very long time but it is done.  I have accept that my mother loves me in her own limited way and will always be the way she is.  Since she is a Christian, we will have lots of time for loving each other and spending joyous times together in heaven.

Thank you for that beautiful poem. I too have had to replace sadness and some bitterness with forgiveness. It is a long hard road and without God, I never would have made it. That poem expresses it all.
