Yes!! Michael got it-the annswer is oil.

It was used in the annointing of the kings, it was poured over the head both to annoint and as a grace to special visitors to the home, it was burned in lams to give light, and it is the thing that the wise virgns at the wedding had kept, while the foolish ones did not keep a ready supply for their lamps.

Good job!

When you said it was literal, you meant it, Whitehorse.

That's a good one.  Oil.    Hm.

I thought I would try to come up with one on my own, let me know what you think.

During my time you shall not sew.
By using me the sickness goes.
Ashes join to bear our grief.
The soldiers cast for my relief.
The dogs threaten this effect.
Untempered walls do not protect.
Now a veil can be crossed.
For I am the sign of a priesthood lost.

What am I?

A tear? As in the kind that rips the curtain, not the wet kind. Smiley

I was there at the crowning of kings.
I bring to light, dark, hidden things.
I soothe the head
Give light to the eyes
I divvy the guests
Foolish from wise.

How about-----WISDOM?

I already said that!  Angry Get your own good ideas!

Yes!  A tear or rend.  All the verses I used for each verse of the poem/riddle use rend or rent but they mean tear.

Good work.

During my time you shall not sew.
(time to rend and a time to sew)
By using me the sickness goes.
(the priest rends the leprosy from the garment)
Ashes join to bear our grief.
(sack cloth ashes and rending of garments)
The soldiers cast for my relief.
(soldiers cast lots to avoid rending Christ's robe)
The dogs threaten this effect.
(dogs and pigs may turn and rend you in rejection of the pearls)
Untempered walls do not protect.
Now a veil can be crossed.
   (the temple veil was rent)
For I am the sign of a priesthood lost.
(the old testament priest were instructed to never rend their robe)
(the high priest did though when questioning Jesus)

Thanks, Michael! That was a great puzzle. Smiley

Here's a new riddle while I think of one that is actually scriptural:

Elmo knew the happiness of his third birthday would  be in jeopardy when he received the results of his long division test. So he decided to stuff it into his coat pocket until after the party, knowing his parents would be furious at his D-! After all, he wasn't particularly gifted, but neither was he behind. How is this possible?
