The Gods Shall Perish

“Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.” (Jeremiah 10:11)

This is a unique verse. Jeremiah, the second-longest book in the Bible, is written in Hebrew except for this one verse! Why would Jeremiah make this remarkable exception here?

This verse was written in Aramaic, which was the official language of the great Babylonian empire—the world’s chief nation at that time. The Babylonians, as prophesied by Jeremiah, were soon to be used as a weapon in God’s hand to punish His chosen people, carrying them into exile and captivity, and the main reason for such punishment was apostasy. God’s people had corrupted the worship of the true Creator God with the teachings and idols of the Babylonians and all the other nations around them who had rejected God.

Jeremiah had repeatedly condemned this apostasy, showing that God’s people were to be punished by the very nations whose religious philosophies had so attracted them.

But those nations needed also to understand that this was not because of their own strength nor the merits of their own gods. Thus, Jeremiah appropriately inserted a special word to be conveyed to the Babylonians, in their own official tongue. Only the true God, who made the heavens and the earth, is in control of the heavens and the earth.

The same type of warning, delivered in the “official” language of the modern world (“science?”), is needed even more today than it was in Jeremiah’s day. Today’s “gods”—Marx, Darwin, etc.—are even less deserving of trust than Zeus or Baal, and yet professing Christians have gone after them in droves. It is urgent that we call them back to the true Creator and Savior, Jesus Christ, urging them—before God’s judgment falls once again—to repudiate every vestige of evolutionary humanism. HMM

The Law Misunderstood
by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

There are three misconceptions that most people entertain about the law of God and its Ten Commandments:

Most people have a vague notion that the law always was in existence and that it must have been given to the first man, Adam, or soon after. Actually, God gave the law to Moses for Israel about 1500 B.C., after about 2500 years of human history had elapsed (John 1:17). So mankind lived on earth for about 2500 years without the law or the Ten Commandments.
Most people suppose that the law and the Ten Commandments were given to mankind in general, while, in fact, it was given to Israel alone (Deuteronomy 5:2,3).
Most people suppose that the law and the Ten Commandments were given to help us to do right. Even some clergymen teach this, although the Bible clearly teaches that they were given to show us that we are guilty sinners.

It is true that the law, while given to Israel, also shows the Gentile that he is a sinner. This is why Romans 3:19 says:

“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought in guilty before God.”

But most important of all: Few people realize that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins to deliver us from the just condemnation of the law. This is taught in the following Scriptures:

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us…” (Gal.3:13).

“For God hath made Him to be sin for us, [Christ] who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (II Cor. 5:21).

“For sin shall not have dominion over you; for ye are NOT UNDER THE LAW, BUT UNDER GRACE” (Rom. 6:14).

FEATURED ANALYSIS

The Razor’s Edginess41

Arnold Ahlert

Procter & Gamble Co. has joined the ranks of the corporate virtue signalers catering to the terminally offended. Their target? “Toxic” males — to whom they still intend to sell razor blades.

The company is building a new ad campaign42 around its “The Best A Man Can Get” tagline, melding it with the #MeToo movement. After opening with “news” about that movement, the ad’s narrator asserts that the notion “boys will be boys” no longer makes the grade. “Is this the best a man can get?” the narrator asks. “Is it? We can’t hide from it. It has been going on far too long. We can’t laugh it off, making the same old excuses.”

Pankaj Bhalla, Gillette brand director for North America, explained P&G’s strategy: “This is an important conversation happening, and as a company that encourages men to be their best, we feel compelled to both address it and take action of our own. We are taking a realistic look at what’s happening today, and aiming to inspire change by acknowledging that the old saying ‘Boys Will Be Boys’ is not an excuse.”

A “realistic look” according to whom? The whiners who insist that an acceptable definition of masculinity requires all men to embrace their inner Pajama Boy43? How about the “settled science” crowd, which insists gender is “fluid?” Can a “toxic male” be trapped in a woman’s body, just waiting to get out — and offend?

As The Patriot Post’s Thomas Gallatin reminds us44, an American Psychological Association (APA) poisoned by “progressive” dogma “is guided by the leftist theory that gender is a nonbinary social construct rather than a binary reality based upon biology. But even at that, one particular gender is just the worst.”

And for nearly two minutes, the Grey New York ad agency makes sure that message is hammered home45. The ad depicts the bullying of a boy by fellow teenagers who text disparaging messages to him that appear onscreen as he is shown being hugged by his mother. Another scene depicts a boardroom and a man patting a woman on the shoulder while saying, “What I think she’s actually trying to say…” It also includes a clip of former NFL player Terry Crews telling Congress he was sexually harassed. “Men need to hold other men accountable,” Crews states.

Enter the narrator again. “Some already are,” the narrator states. “But some is not enough. Because the boys watching today will be the men of tomorrow.”

Make that the docile, emasculated men of tomorrow if the APA and P&G get their way.

Like so many aspects of leftist dogma, the presumption of collective guilt hangs heavy in the air. In other words, “toxic” is the default position for every man insufficiently attuned to the higher consciousness advocated by these self-aggrandizing doyens of political correctness. “It’s time we acknowledge that brands, like ours, play a role in influencing culture. We have a responsibility to make sure we are promoting positive, attainable, inclusive and healthy versions of what it means to be a man,” P&G stated. “With that in mind, we have spent the last few months taking a hard look at our past and coming communication and reflecting on the types of men and behaviors we want to celebrate. We pledge to actively challenge the stereotypes and expectations of what it means to be a man everywhere you see Gillette. In the ads we run, the images we publish to social media, the words we choose, and so much more.”

P&G wants to challenge stereotypes and expectations? Try challenging a toxic culture — one that celebrates fatherlessness46 as an “alternative lifestyle” and ridicules religious values that transmit common decency and decorum.

Has P&G taken a hard look at the possibility that an ad campaign that lectures potential customers about their shortcomings might alienate those customers? Or, like Nike47, has the company calculated that nurturing the victimist mentality will engender enough sales to offset those alienated customers?

PJ Media’s Jim Treacher aptly describes48 where P&G is coming from. “Consumers, men in particular, must be made to feel worthless,” he explains. “They have to be reminded that their needs and desires are wrong under any circumstances, that their instincts are loathsome, that their very existence is a malignancy, and that they’re responsible for all the world’s ills whether they want to admit it or not.”

“Now give [P&G] your money, you piece of garbage.”

Millions of Americans have zero interest in such pompous pretentiousness. They’re sick and tired of being lectured, cajoled, berated, and bombarded by a collection of self-appointed blowhards who have the unmitigated gall to believe they, and they alone, own the franchise on enlightened thinking, even as they remain utterly oblivious to their own humorless, hypocritical, and overbearing shortcomings.

Those shortcomings erupted like a volcano following the 2016 election. And in keeping with the metaphor, the insufferable “progressive” self-righteousness that has infected awards shows, football, movies, TV, and advertising is the ongoing lava flow.

The best antidote? Laughter and ridicule — and in this particular case, a number49 of competing direct-to-consumer subscription razor clubs that sell razor blades at considerably cheaper prices — minus the proselytizing.

That’s the best a man can get.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Victor Davis Hanson: “Whether or not they like Trump, millions of voters still think the president is all that stands between them and socialism, radical cultural transformation and social chaos. Many would prefer Trump’s sometimes-over-the-top tweets and hard bark to the circus they saw at the Brett Kavanaugh nomination hearings, the rantings of Ocasio-Cortez, or the endless attempts to remove Trump from office. What usually ensure one-term presidencies are unpopular wars (Lyndon Johnson) or tough economic times (Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush). If Trump avoids both, perhaps a majority of voters will see him as political chemotherapy — occasionally nausea-inducing but still necessary and largely effective — to stop a toxic and metastasizing political cancer.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “To curtail free expression strikes twice at intellectual freedom, for whoever deprives another of the right to state unpopular views necessarily deprives others of the right to listen to those views.” —C. Van Woodward (1908-1999)

For the record: “Nancy Pelosi wants Trump to postpone his State of the Union address due to a government shutdown yet she didn’t postpone her luxury vacation to Hawaii when the government was shutdown.” —Charlie Kirk

Political theater: “What is the State of the Union? The government is closed because of President Trump. If it continues to be closed on the 29th, I think it’s a good idea to delay it until the government is open.” —Chuck Schumer

The BIG Lie: “If Joe Biden gets in, he’s kind of the quintessential centrist, if you will.” —CNN’s Kate Bolduan

Non Compos Mentis: “Conservatives are thrilled a woman with a concealed-carry permit shot and killed a 19-year-old would-be mugger. That’s not how justice works. The penalty for theft is not death, nor do we want it to be.” —Think Progress editor Zack Ford, who added: “The fact she was able to protect herself in no way motivates me to change my belief that she should not have had a gun in the first place.” He also stated, “Of course I don’t think he should have had a gun either, but if she had let him rob her, even at gunpoint, both likely would have survived.” (“What happens if, having collected her purse, the mugger decides to drag her around the corner and rape her? Should she let that happen too? What if he’s high and shoots her for no real reason? The point is, Zack Ford has no idea what would have happened next if the woman hadn’t been armed. More importantly, she had no idea either.” —John Sexton)

And last… “Karen Pence teaches at school that defines marriage as one man & one woman! Nancy Pelosi belongs to [a] church that defines marriage as one man & one woman! Guess which woman liberals attack.” —Liz Wheeler

IN BRIEF

Pelosi’s SOTU Political Play11

Jordan Candler

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this appeal to President Donald Trump yesterday:

On January 3rd, it was my privilege as Speaker to invite you to deliver the State of the Union address on January 29th. …

The U.S. Secret Service was designated as the lead federal agency responsible for coordinating, planning, exercising, and implementing security for National Special Security Events by Public Law 106-544, December 19, 2000. However, both the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security have not been funded for 26 days now — with critical departments hamstrung by furloughs.

Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th.

DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen immediately contradicted Pelosi’s assertion, saying the Secret Service is “fully prepared” for the SOTU. Pelosi responded curtly, “I don’t care what they say.

Ed Morrissey quips12, "And with that, the new Speaker of the House just made the best case possible for a perpetual shutdown. Kidding! What I meant to say was that Nancy Pelosi has finally sounded a note of wisdom, at least in her reminder that presidents used to just deliver a report in writing to Congress.” Indeed they did. As Pelosi also noted, “During the 19th Century and up until the presidency of Woodrow Wilson, these annual State of the Union messages were delivered to Congress in writing.”

Morrissey rightly says this is “a tradition worth restoring, especially to reverse the treatment of the president as some kind of feudal lord in Congress.”

Philip Klein chimes in13, “There may be times when it makes sense for a president to address a joint session of Congress in front of the whole nation, such as when former President George W. Bush spoke to the nation after the Sept. 11 attacks and laid out his vision for fighting the ‘war on terror.’ But as an annual staged event, the State of the Union is pointless. In an era of the 24/7 news, the Internet, and social media, there is no reason for networks to provide airtime to this event. The president has endless tools at his disposal to make his case to Congress and the country.”

Meanwhile, Pelosi is hardly acting with honorable intentions here. As Morrissey points out, “Pelosi’s not looking to restore the proper co-equal-branch dynamics under the Constitution. She was delighted to offer regal hosannas to Barack Obama, and she’d be equally delighted to offer them to President Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or President Jill Stein, for that matter. She just doesn’t want Trump using Congress to beat up Democrats over the wall.”

Indeed, security has nothing to do with her political theater. It’s entirely within Pelosi’s power to end the shutdown, which would render a SOTU delay completely unnecessary. But blocking funding for border security isn’t the only thing she’s after. She also wants to stifle her opponents’ justification for standing their ground. That’s called having your cake and eating it too.

If Trump decides to continue with the address, Ben Shapiro offers this salient advice: “Trump should do a remote State of the Union from the border and feature Border Patrol agents and Angel Moms.”

Furloughed Fed Employees Are Now on Paid Vacation14

Thomas Gallatin

President Donald Trump signed legislation Wednesday ensuring that the roughly 380,000 furloughed federal workers currently not receiving pay will be paid once the partial government shutdown15 ends. By taking this action, Trump eased the impact of the shutdown on federal employees while at the same time encouraging continued stability for labor-market statistics. As The Wall Street Journal explains16, “Had that not occurred, the loss of more than 300,000 employees from the government’s payroll would have most likely overwhelmed any private-sector job creation. That in turn would have caused total nonfarm payrolls to decrease for the first time since October 2010, snapping a streak of 99 straight months of job growth. The streak is the longest on record dating to 1939.”

Even with Trump’s action guaranteeing that there is light at the end of the shutdown tunnel, hundreds of thousands of federal workers — many of them essential and still on the job17 — are feeling the immediate financial hit from missed paychecks. Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her fellow Democrats are content to play political games by refusing to even meet with Trump and Republicans in negotiation efforts and by requesting that Trump postpone11 the annual State of the Union Address over bogus security concerns. In truth, Pelosi doesn’t want Trump to have that much unfiltered access to the American people, where he can make a strong compelling case for the need for a border wall and can expose the Democrats for being opposed to enforcing the nation’s sovereign right to secure our borders. She’d rather continue the pain and theater of her shutdown so she can better represent people who aren’t even citizens of the nation.

Importantly, though, despite the partial government shutdown, the vast majority of Americans are getting along just fine18. In fact, if it wasn’t for the media constantly covering it, would many Americans even know there was a shutdown?

Assurance Before God

“And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.” (1 John 3:19)

There is a chain of reasoning in this context that is important to understand. Our hearts will be “assured” before God (1 John 3:19) if we love the brethren in “deed and in truth” (v. 18). A lack of that heart assurance condemns us (v. 20). If our heart does not condemn us, then we will have “confidence toward God” (v. 21).

It is worth noting that John uses the word “love” 26 times in this little letter. The word “know” is used 31 times, but the word “assure” is used only once (our text) and the word for “confidence” just four times. In each case, the promises of boldness in prayer or trust in answered prayer are based on our obedience.

Apparently, the key to an effective relationship with God, especially the key to a confidence in our prayer life, is a ready, visible, and instant response to God’s requirements for the believer. To the degree that we abide in Him (2:28), we will be confident when He returns. Our ready love for the brethren will keep us bold before God in our prayers (3:21), and our Christlike lifestyle will give us boldness at the judgment (4:17).

Meanwhile, absolute and steady belief in God’s salvation will remove any doubt that God hears us when we pray (5:14).

There is a continuing loop in these messages. We gain confidence as we “do” truth. We find more boldness as we understand God’s answers to our needs and prayers for others. That, in turn, increases our confidence that God is listening to our prayers, making our hearts all the more confident in our relationship with our heavenly Father. HMM III

Are You Ready?
by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

I wonder what finally became of Molotov? Most of us know only that he was expelled from the Communist Party and was later recalled to Moscow to answer for what Kruschev, of all people, called “barbarous crimes”! Molotov, “the hammer,” was active in the Communist Revolution since 15 years of age. A close friend of Stalin, he served Soviet Russia variously as Secretary of the Central Committee, Premier of USSR, its Foreign Minister and its Representative to the UN.

But in 1957 Kruschev, jealous of Stalin’s popularity, dismissed Molotov from the Presidium and sent him away as ambassador to ‘Outer Mongolia’. Now disgraced along with his old friend Stalin, this once popular hero of the Soviets was discarded by the system he championed. Pathetic, but he deserved it.

Contrast this with the Apostle Paul. He had been great, prospering in his religion above many of his equals, being “more exceedingly zealous” of the traditions of his fathers (Gal. 1:14). But he gave all this up and counted it loss for “the excellency of the knowledge of Christ.” Serving Christ amid unceasing persecution, he said:

“But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel [good news] of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24).

Yes, and in his last recorded words before Nero beheaded him, Paul said:

“I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown…” (II Tim. 4:6-8).

What a triumphant way to go! And you, my friend, can go that way too — if you can say with Paul, “I am ready.”

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

A careful examination of cultural changes in America leads to the inescapable conclusion that we are engaged in a slowly unfolding, collective national suicide. The very values, principles, and social norms we once accepted as universal truths have given way to a tsunami of mass delusion in which a growing portion of society vehemently, even violently, rejects the standards of past generations.

The evidence is obvious to even the most obtuse person. We now live in a country where a large segment of the population believes sex is not biologically determined but rather an expression of inner feelings, while simultaneously claiming sexual orientation is genetic. We stifle economic growth to save the snail darter and delta smelt while slaughtering tens of millions of human babies in abortion clinics.

And we are even now eroding the foundation of the traditional, nuclear family that has been the bedrock of society since the dawn of mankind.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the total fertility rate for American women fell below the replacement rate for the ninth straight year. The total fertility rate (TFR) is an estimate of the number of births per 1,000 women over their lifetimes, and replacement rate is the average number of births child-bearing women must have to maintain static population levels. Replacement rate is generally considered to be 2.1 births per woman and, according to the latest data, the TFR for the United States now stands at 1.75 births per woman39.

It’s another checkpoint in a long-term decline in American fertility rates40. Since 1971, American woman have only been above replacement rate twice — in 2006 and 2007. These rates also vary by race and region. White women are now having the least children, and Hispanic women the most. Birth rates are highest in the American Southeast and Midwest, and lowest in the District of Columbia.

Though America had long been the exception, with rising birth rates and increasing wealth, our decline now mimics historical trends among advanced nations. The richer a nation becomes, the fewer children families have on average. Additionally, there is a clear correlation between a nation’s religiosity and its birth rate; the more religious a nation is, the more children it has on average. As a nation becomes less religious, its birth rate declines. Higher immigration levels are also associated with higher birth rates, although by the third generation, immigrant birth rates are in line with native birth rates.

In the U.S. there are various factors that contribute to the declining birth rate. According to an analysis by the American Enterprise Institute41, in recent years there has been a significant decline of the number of American women in their 30s having children, meaning that Millennial women will likely have far fewer children than previous generations. Part of this is due to notable changes in marriage patterns, with Millennials waiting longer to get married than previous generations.

In addition to the progressive cultural shift that has placed a lower priority upon marriage (and even vilified it as an anachronistic relic of an oppressive patriarchal society), other barriers have impeded marriage and family creation, including prohibitive levels of student-loan debt, decreasing levels of home ownership due to rising costs, an extended adolescence as younger men and women spend longer in college, rising childcare costs resulting in part from a decline in the support of extended families, and a self-centered mindset that places personal desires (for responsibility-free living, travel, accumulation of wealth, etc.) well above the thought of sacrificing in order to create, raise, and provide for a family.

While married women are more likely to have children than unmarried women, there are fewer women getting married during their peak fertility years, with the average age at marriage increasing. So by the time women do get married and begin to have children, the length of time they can conceive, even with the assistance of reproductive technology, declines. Interestingly, women surveyed indicated a desire for more children42, and were inhibited by the barriers mentioned previously.

This trend has dire long-term consequences for society. As society falls below replacement rates, the average age of the population increases while the number of younger people working to support the social infrastructure, and available and willing to care for the elderly, declines. With a declining population, the demand for housing lessens, causing home values (the largest asset owned by the average American) to drop. Social Security and Medicare continue to race toward insolvency as the ratio of contributing workers to beneficiaries plummets.

In summary, the abandonment of “traditional family values,”43 building block of civil society, has led to a dissolution of social cohesion, which in turn has led to myriad social problems.

Fortunately, these principles are eternal, and we can reverse this trend with effort — by restoring respect for marriage and family and elevating the nobility of self-sacrifice in the service of a greater good. Marriage and family require enormous sacrifice, patience, and delayed gratification, but the rewards, both personal and societal, are enormous.

OPINION IN BRIEF

John Stossel: “While pundits and politicians act as if everything needs government intervention, the opposite is true. Even security work is done better by the private sector. At San Francisco’s airport, security lines move faster. Passengers told me, ‘The screeners are nicer!’ The TSA even acknowledged that those screeners are better at finding contraband. That’s because San Francisco (Kansas City, Seattle and a dozen smaller airports) privatized the screening process. Private companies are responsible for security. Private contractors are better because they must compete. Perform badly, and they get fired. But government never fires itself. Government workers shout, ‘We are essential!’ But I say: ‘Give me a break. Most of you are not.’”

SHORT CUTS

IN BRIEF

23 Million Americans Feed at the Leftmedia Trough Every Night11

Nate Jackson

For more than 22 years, The Patriot Post’s mission has been to combat Leftmedia bias. Thus we weren’t surprised when the Media Research Center released its latest report12 revealing that coverage of President Donald Trump on network nightly newscasts — watched by 23 million people — was 90% negative in 2018. That matches historically bad coverage in 2017, and it aligns with similar studies by organizations like Pew Research Center and Harvard University, neither of which are conservative.

One major aspect of incessantly negative coverage is Russia. “For the second year in a row,” NewsBusters notes, “the Russia investigation was the single most-covered topic amid the networks’ Trump coverage, garnering 858 minutes of airtime. Since January 20, 2017, the Russia probe has received 2,092 minutes of coverage on just the three evening newscasts.”

Or, as humorist Dave Barry put it13, “That was all we heard about, day after soul-crushing day, for the entire year.”

Oddly, Trump’s relationship with the mainstream media is almost symbiotic. As we’ve noted before, the Leftmedia gave Trump $5 billion in free airtime during the 2016 campaign in what was supposed to prop him up for a sure loss to Hillary Clinton. Beset by Trump Derangement Syndrome14 after he won and desperate for ad revenue, the media ramped up the negative attacks. But Trump feeds off of those attacks, and, as with Democrats retaking the House, he arguably benefits from having a foil or a villain. He loves battling “the FAKE NEWS media,” which he calls “the enemy of the American People!15”

It works. NewsBuster (a division of MRC) says, “Despite the media’s obvious disapproval, public opinion of the President actually improved slightly during 2018, from an average 40% approval on January 1 to 42.7% approval on December 31, according to RealClearPolitics.” We noted a similar trend16 last May.

A Republican with less backbone — which is to say virtually every other Republican — would have backed down long ago in the face of this media barrage. Not Trump, for good or ill. The real collusion scandal in our nation is between the media and the Democrat Party. This study is another marker.

As a final question: What would our 50/50 political landscape look like if media coverage was 50/50 instead of 90/10?

Is May’s Brexit-Deal Defeat Really a Win for the UK?17

Thomas Gallatin

As many predicted, British Prime Minster Theresa May’s Brexit deal she had long worked to secure with Brussels went down in flames Tuesday. Members of Parliament from both major parties soundly rejected the deal by a whopping 230 votes, a margin of defeat not seen in the UK in over a century. The immediate fallout raised questions over whether May’s days as PM are numbered and, more significantly, if a new Brexit agreement with the European Union is even possible as the March 29 deadline for avoiding a “hard” Brexit approaches.

For the time being, it appears that May retains majority support, much of which is likely due to the fact that the alternative would be the far-left socialist Jeremy Corbyn of the Labor Party. That said, May’s massive failure is a severe political wound from which she is unlikely to recover. She was voted in as PM specifically to work out a Brexit deal. But she was given the near-impossible task of negotiating an international divorce settlement, which almost half of UK voters never wanted in the first place and for which a vindictive EU bureaucracy demanded its pound of flesh.

Many are now wringing their hands as the Brexit “crash-out” date nears, warning that a “hard” Brexit — exiting the EU without securing any economic agreements — would spell disaster for the British economy. Some UK political leaders are now floating the idea of calling for a second referendum, hoping for a do-over that would end Brexit and keep the UK within the EU. However, that idea has garnered considerable criticism as it suggests that the people’s vote will only be accepted when it aligns with the politically correct sensibilities of the governing elites. In other words, it makes a sham of the democratic process.

But the real question is whether a hard Brexit would be as big an economic disaster as many of the political elites are warning. There would likely be some immediate pain as new trade and economic agreements would have to made, but it also would open up vast new opportunities for global trade agreements free from Brussels’ bureaucratic controls. It would mean a return to greater national sovereignty for the British people.

And finally, what few are acknowledging is the sinking ship that is the EU. As Investor’s Business Daily notes, “The EU is a disaster in slow motion. Its laughable rules, regulations and endlessly detailed directions for its member nations on how to run their economies — instructing them on everything from immigration policy to the size and shape of bananas allowed in markets — represent a massive loss of sovereignty and economic self-rule for its 27 members. Despite all the dire prognostications by pundits, politicians and punters of various stripes, Britain doesn’t have much to lose by leaving the EU. … Nearly everyone expected disaster if the Brexit vote won. It didn’t happen. Instead, Britain did better than the rest of Europe.”

So, as our neighbors across the pond struggle with fears over venturing out as a sovereign nation uncertain about their economic future, we here in America say: Welcome, we’re open for business.

King is perhaps best remembered for his “I Have a Dream18” speech to hundreds of thousands of Americans gathered on the Washington Mall for the August 1963 Civil Rights March. That speech was, and is today, considered one of the most pivotal masterpieces of 20th-century rhetoric.

In that speech, King declared:

“Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God’s children. … In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.”

He famously concluded:

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal.’ … I have a dream that one day … the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning, ‘My country 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, Land of the Pilgrims’ pride, From every mountainside, Let freedom ring.‘ When we let freedom ring … we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children — black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics — will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, 'Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, We are free at last!’”

But the Democrat Party19 of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize recipient’s era, which simultaneously embraced freedom and bondage, has now devolved into a political machine fueled by fear, hate, and division — one that has turned the wisdom of King’s iconic words upside down.

Long after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Democrats are still focusing on “color” rather than “character.” It’s as if King had said, “I have a dream that my children will be judged only by the color of their skin, not the content of their character.”

Today, more than five decades after King was murdered by a racist sociopath from Illinois, the Democrats’ so-called “Great Society20” has effectively enslaved poor black Americans, and those of other ethnic backgrounds, on modern-day Democrat-controlled urban poverty plantations21. The Democrats’ so-called “War on Poverty,” in which more than $22 trillion has been spent, ostensibly, to “lift up the poor,” has been an abysmal failure in human terms, but an extraordinary political success.

Democrat President Lyndon Baines Johnson, at the time he launched his populist social-welfare programs, outlined the political success he anticipated. In a conversation with two Democrat governors, Johnson said of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, “I’ll have those niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years.”

While that may not have been the political motivation of other Great Society do-gooders, to paraphrase Virgil’s Aeneid, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

In today’s caustic political climate, there are few Beltway Democrats who are motivated by “good intentions.” The current breed of leftists have proven to be the masters of hypocrisy22, and they have successfully subjugated their black American constituency to their political will, convincing them that they’re victims and dependents and that they must rely on the state for their salvation.

As Thomas Jefferson observed, “Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition.”

Of the current generation of race-bait agitators, Stanford economist Thomas Sowell23, whose brilliant cultural observations are informed, in part, because he was born black, observed24, “Racism is not dead, but it is on life support — kept alive by politicians, race hustlers and people who get a sense of superiority by denouncing others as ‘racist.’”

Fortunately, there is growing evidence that black Americans are awakening to the Democrats’ generational charade — realizing that those politicians betrayed MLK’s grand vision of freedom and equality.

Something odd happened on the way to the midterm elections last fall. The loyalties of constituencies once assumed to be the Democrats’ exclusive and unchallenged base began to shift toward, of all people, Donald Trump25.

As was the case in the 2016 presidential election, blue-collar optimism26 soared.

But there has also been a notable shift in support for Trump and Republicans among black Americans, who are among the major beneficiaries27 of the GOP’s economic policies. In recent months, that approval rating13 reached a record level for any Republican president — 36% — almost twice what it was in 2017. Household income among blacks is increasing, while unemployment is at a record low. (Hispanic Americans are also reaping the benefits28 of the Trump economy.)

Clearly, many blacks are recognizing that Democrats turned King’s dream into a nightmare29.

Despite the Trump administration’s extraordinary economic record30, this modest racial awakening wasn’t enough to offset the Democrat Party’s31 pervasive “Hate Trump32” campaign theme, as relentlessly promoted by its Leftmedia propagandists33. Indeed, it’s evident that perpetuating that theme, even if it means plunging the economy into recession34, is paramount to the Left’s political agenda35.

On July 4th, 1965, preaching at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, MLK declared, “Love is the only absolute. … I’ve seen too much hate to want to hate myself; hate is too great a burden to bear. … Hate does something to the soul that causes one to lose his objectivity. The man who hates can’t think straight; the man who hates can’t reason right; the man who hates can’t see right; the man who hates can’t walk right. And I know now that Jesus is right, that love is the way.”

One of the most outspoken detractors of the Left’s orthodoxy is King’s niece, Alveda. She was 17 at the time of her uncle’s assassination, and she recently recalled a conversation with her father, King’s younger brother Alfred, on the day MLK died.

Alveda told him, “I hate white people. They killed Uncle ML.”

Her father, also a pastor and civil-rights leader, replied, “No, white people didn’t kill my brother; white people didn’t kill your uncle. White people march with us, pray with us, go to jail with us, live with us, die with us. No, no, the devil did this. You have to forgive; you have to forgive.”

Such forgiveness is anathema to most of today’s Democrat leaders — and the black community leaders in their stable.

Alveda added, “Acts 17:26 says, ‘Of one blood God made all people, to live together on the face of the earth.’ So we can be brothers and sisters because we are one blood; we are the human race. And I believe if my uncle were here today, he’d like for us to consider ourselves as human beings, not different races. One race, colorblind.”

We should all remember that Liberty is colorblind36, and that King’s legacy37 was founded on that immutable principle.

As for me and a hundred million grassroots Americans38 across our nation, we reject the politics of fear, hate, and division, and we honor Martin Luther King’s dream for Americans of every race, creed, and background.

The Patriot Post® · MLK v the Democrat Party

By Mark Alexander · Jan. 16, 2019 · https://patriotpost.us/alexander/60585-mlk-v-the-democrat-party

“Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition.” —Thomas Jefferson (1781)
In 1983, Republican President Ronald Reagan1 signed into law a bill designating the third Monday in January a national holiday honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.2, who was born on 15 January 1929. King, like his father and grandfather before him, was a Baptist minister. He was pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, and he founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Next Monday is the official federal observance of the MLK holiday.

However, this week, there was another King in the news.

The Republican Party took swift action3 against one of its own, Iowa Rep. Steve King, for remarks that reflect a profound insensitivity, if not abject ignorance, to our nation’s history of racial intolerance. King, lacking any modicum of self-awareness, asked4, “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stripped King of his committee assignments, stating, “We will not tolerate this type of language in the Republican Party … or in the Democrat Party as well.” He noted that King’s remarks “call into question whether he will treat all Americans equally, without regard for race and ethnicity. … Let us hope and pray earnestly that this action will lead to greater reflection and ultimately change on his part.”

In the midst of Rep. King’s condemnation by both Republicans and Democrat leaders, Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel called on Democrats to deal with racism within their own ranks, noting, “I hope Nancy Pelosi also takes action against all the Democrats who continue to associate with prominent anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan.” That would include, among others, Demo newbie Rep. Rashida “motherf—er” Tlaib (D-MI), who recently entertained Abbas Hamideh, a man with a long history of expressing anti-Semitic views, such as, “Yes, the Nazis are still around with a different name: Zionists!”

Of note, due to conservative media attention highlighting the racist associations5 of those Demo leftists leading the Women’s March in DC this weekend, some Democrats have quietly declined to attend or support the confab of their largest constituency, female voters6.

Fact is, Democrats have long cultivated and courted haters like Farrakhan and Hamideh and have become dependent on racial and ethnic division as the foundation of their party platform.

The Democrats’ de facto leader, Barack Obama7, was himself a disciple of the Afrocentric and anti-Semitic hate spewed by “Reverend” Jeremiah Wright8 and other Marxist mentors9 promoting black supremacy10. Of course, Obama got a free pass from a shamefully spineless mainstream media.

Obama, though, was merely the latest of the Demo race hustlers11 and their supporting cast of race-bait profiteers12 who, in the years since MLK’s assassination in 1968, have betrayed his dream, most recently under the disingenuous pretense that only black lives matter13.

The lack of Democrats with the guts to call out the haters within their own ranks comes as no surprise, because more than half a century after MLK’s famous “I Have a Dream14” speech, racism is king, and “color” still trumps “character.”

Obama was elected both because of his unspoken promise to assuage the “white guilt” of his leftist patrons and because of his “color” rhetoric: “A deep distrust exists in communities of color. … There are still problems and communities of color aren’t just making these problems up. … Frustrations have deep roots in many communities of color. Too many individuals, particularly young people of color, do not feel as if they are being treated fairly.”

In the five decades since MLK’s death, “color” differentiation and racial division — in fact, division of all sorts — has become the common denominator in the Democrats’ constituent-building strategy.

The propagation of this insidious race-bait charade was apparent long before MLK’s generation, most notably in the writings of his two most famous civil-rights predecessors, Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington15.

Douglass escaped slavery and became the 19th century’s most noted and articulate abolitionist. In 1855 he asserted, “I would unite with anybody to do right; and with nobody to do wrong.”

In 1876, commemorating the legacy of Abraham Lincoln16 on the occasion of our nation’s first centennial, Douglass noted:

“That we are here in peace today is a compliment and a credit to American civilization, and a prophecy of still greater national enlightenment and progress in the future. I refer to the past not in malice … but simply to place more distinctly in front the gratifying and glorious change which has come both to our white fellow citizens and ourselves, and to congratulate all upon the contrast between now and then, the new dispensation of freedom with its thousand blessings to both races, and the old dispensation of slavery with its ten thousand evils to both races, white and black.”

Douglass wrote of the “past, the present, and the future, with the long and dark history of our bondage behind us, and with liberty, progress, and enlightenment before us.”

But Democrats aren’t willing to put “bondage behind us,” and they refuse to focus on the “liberty, progress, and enlightenment before us,” which is where Republicans have set our nation’s sights for decades.

In 1901, King’s most notable predecessor in the fight for civil rights, Booker T. Washington, founder of the famed Tuskegee Institute, wrote in his seminal work, Up From Slavery:

“I resolved that I would permit no man, no matter what his color might be, to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him. … I pity from the bottom of my heart any individual who is so unfortunate as to get into the habit of holding race prejudice. … In the sight of God there is no color line, and we want to cultivate a spirit that will make us forget that there is such a line anyway.”

He added, “Great men cultivate love. … Only little men cherish a spirit of hatred.”

Washington was a critic of his contemporary, W.E.B. Du Bois, who made a practice of fomenting racial division.

In his 1911 book, My Larger Education, Washington wrote of Du Bois and other racial agitators words that are even more applicable to their present-day brethren:

“There is a class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. … Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays.”

Washington continued:

“Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs. … There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who do not want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public.”

And that pretty much sums up today’s Democrat Party haters, those who want the patient to remain ill at all costs.

In April of 1963, Dr. King wrote in his letter from a Birmingham jail17 about those who foment hatred, specifically those adherents to the hatred embraced by Farrakhan’s mentor, Elijah Muhammad:

“I stand in the middle of two opposing forces in the Negro community. One is a force of complacency. … The other force is one of bitterness and hatred, and it comes perilously close to advocating violence. It is expressed in the various black nationalist groups that are springing up across the nation, the largest and best-known being Elijah Muhammad’s Muslim movement. This movement is made up of people who have lost faith in America, who have absolutely repudiated Christianity, and who have concluded that the white man is an incorrigible ‘devil.’ … I have tried to stand between these two forces, saying that we need emulate neither the ‘do-nothingism’ of the complacent nor the hatred of the black nationalist. … For there is the more excellent way of love and non-violent protest. I am grateful to God that, through the influence of the Negro church, the way of nonviolence became an integral part of our struggle.”
