Biblical scholar tackles most common misconceptions of Christ

A Christian scholar is exposing six of the most common lies people tell about Christ.

In his newest book, Slandering Jesus: Six Lies People Tell About the Man Who Said He Was God (Tyndale House), Dr. Erwin Lutzer says a serious erosion of biblical doctrine in evangelical churches has led to many misconceptions about Jesus. Dr. Lutzer says there are many false portraits about Jesus in today's culture, and many high-profile celebrities, such as Oprah Winfrey, add to the confusion about the Christ of the Holy Bible.

"The thing is that Oprah teaches that Jesus is one way among many, and that God is more interested in our hearts than he is in whether or not we believe in Jesus. And she is a microcosm of what happens in America, a microcosm of what Americans believe, that Jesus is great, but he's not the only way to God," he says. "And the point that I make is that once you grab the seriousness of sin, of necessity, Jesus is the only way to the Father."

The author says it is vital for true Christians to be able to defend the unique claims of Christ, and that their faith has been well-placed in Jesus. Furthermore, he points out that Christ is the only figure in history who offers forgiveness of sins.

One of the most frustrating aspects of my own personal witness for Christ is the heresies taught by so many different cults and sects.  Things like "pray to Mary because she can get things from God that Jesus cannot," "partake of the sacraments and you will receive a portion of God's grace," or "water baptism leads to (eventual) salvation."  Frustrating does not even begin to describe my mental state when I hear these or any number of other heresies taught as official dogma.

All we can really do is rely on God and His Truth, and defend the faith with His Truth above all else.
