The True Remedy by James Smith
From Grace Gems - Free and Public Domain:
Very Old - But Beautiful and Timeless Treasures.

The True Remedy!

James Smith, 1856

Nothing is so important when the body is badly diseased — as to procure and apply the right remedy in good time. For lack of this, many have suffered long, and at length died. It was not because there was no remedy — but because they did not know it; or knowing, did not apply it. Just so is it, in reference to spiritual things. We are surrounded by the spiritually diseased, the suffering, and the dying — but there is a remedy! Some imagine that there is none; others are led away by lying advertisements, a few know and employ the true remedy. Let us look at some DISORDERS — and then point out the TRUE REMEDY for them.

1. There is SIN. This is the root and cause of all other diseases and sufferings. No sin — no disease, no suffering, either in this world or in eternity. But even sin, the root of all diseases — is not incurable. Sinners have been cured. Sinners may be cured. It would be infidelity to say of any sinner, where the gospel comes — that his case was desperate. We know of no desperate cases — if the true remedy is employed.

That remedy is the blood of Jesus. Jesus died that we may live. He shed His blood to heal our souls. This is the true balm of Gilead. This is the sovereign catholicon (universal remedy). It is placed within our reach in the everlasting gospel. All we have to do is to fix the eye upon it, place confidence in it, and pray the Holy Spirit to apply it.

We must look away from everything else.

We must fix the eye intently upon it.

We must exercise a steady confidence in it.

We must entreat the Holy Spirit to sprinkle it on our hearts.

And, as soon as ever this is the case . . .
the guilt of sin is removed,
the power of sin is undermined,
the love of sin is destroyed, and
we are perfectly and eternally delivered from all the penal consequences of sin!

There is no remedy for sin — but the blood of Jesus! And that is an infallible remedy! It was never applied in vain — it never can be. It cleanses us from all sin. It justifies us perfectly before God. But to prove its efficacy — we must give up all other medicines! Religious services, sacraments, prayers, praises, priests, and presbyters — all must be renounced, and the blood of Jesus alone must become . . .
the sole object of our trust,
the sole ground of our hope, and
our sole plea for pardon and peace at the throne of grace.

This is the true remedy for both sin and sinners. It is exactly suited to them, for its healing properties are infinite and eternal! It is to be obtained gratuitously, without money and without price — and its efficacy may be proved a thousand times over!

Reader, if you would obtain a full pardon of all sin, perfect peace in the presence of God, and an unquestionable title to everlasting glory — then exercise simple faith in the blood of Jesus, and these invaluable blessings are yours, and yours forever. This is the only true remedy!

2. Another soul-disorder is FEAR, slavish fear! This springs either from . . .
guilt on the conscience,
ignorance of the gospel, or
the lack of simple faith in God, as a covenant God.

The true remedy for fear, is faith in God — in God . . .
as revealed in Jesus;
as pledged to us by his precious promises;
as at peace with us, through the perfect work of His beloved Son.

"Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in me," said Jesus. If I believe . . .
that God is love;
that he has received full satisfaction at the hands of His Son for all my sins;
that He will rejoice over me to do me good;
that He will never leave me, nor forsake me;
that He will cause all things to work together for my welfare
 — then how can I fear? What shall I fear? And, as a disciple of Jesus, how can I believe the gospel, the glorious good news — if I do not believe these things? They are spoken to all believers. They are the common property of every member of the living Church of God. Every slavish fear, then — must arise . . .
from taking the eye off the great atonement, or
from not understanding the everlasting gospel, or
from unbelief!

And the true remedy for slavish fear is to . . .
trust simply and entirely to what Christ has done for acceptance with God,
to keep the promises of grace continually before the mind, and
simply believe what God has said, because God has said it. He said it . . .
because He meant it,
because He wished us to believe it, and
because He was willing to give us strong and everlasting consolation.

In every time of trial,
in every season of darkness,
in every severe conflict —
turn then to the Lord's Word, and with David say, "The Lord Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our refuge, therefore will we not fear!" Or, "The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear?" This is the only true remedy!

3. Another soul-disorder is ANXIOUS CARE. Worry or anxiety is prohibited by the gospel, because it is injurious to us, and reflects badly upon the care and kindness of God. Yet we, like Martha — are anxious and troubled about many things. We lose sight of the fact that God is our Father, and as such is engaged to provide for us. We forget that we . . .
are in our Father's world,
are living under our Father's eye,
are fed by our Father's hand, and
that our interests lie near our Father's heart!

The true remedy for anxious care is to realize daily, and every hour of every day . . .
  that the Lord cares for us,
  that he knows where we are, and what we are,
  that he has fixed the bounds of our habitation,
  that his feeding the sparrows is a proof that he will never neglect His children.

Anxiety! As a believer in Jesus, as a child of God — about what should I be anxious?

God is my Father, and he loves me — loves me just as he loves Jesus.

He cares for me — cares for me as much as he cared for the apostle Paul.

He watches over me, as a tender mother watches over her precious infant.

He keeps me — keeps me as the apple of his eye; and lest anything should hurt me, he will keep me night and day. He bids me cast every care upon him. He exhorts me not to worry about anything — but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, to let my requests be made known unto him.

This is the true remedy for care:
to live in close and intimate fellowship with God, and cast all my cares upon him as they come in;
to live realizing the fact, that I am the object of the constant, tender, loving care of God — that my God cares for me, for my best interests, for my everlasting welfare. Yes, this is the only true remedy!

4. Another soul-disorder is SPIRITUAL WEAKNESS. This we deeply and daily feel. The longer we live — the weaker we appear to be; that is — we feel and realize our weakness more. When we look at our duties, on our foes, on our difficulties — we feel at times almost overwhelmed under a sense of our weakness! We are not sufficient of ourselves so much as to think a holy thought; and yet . . .
the old man is to be crucified,
Satan is to be conquered,
the world is to be overcome,
the journey through a waste howling wilderness is to be completed, and the crown is to be won before we wear it.

But there is a remedy for our weakness; it is union to Jesus. When united to Jesus . . .
his wisdom becomes ours,
his righteousness becomes ours,
his strength becomes ours;
his fullness is placed against our emptiness;
his wealth is placed against our poverty; and
his strength is placed against our weakness.

His grace is sufficient for us, and his strength is made perfect in our weakness.

Our needs are to drive us to his fullness;
our weakness is to cause us to lean upon his arm;
and our sense of nothingness to make him all in all.

If I am one with Christ — all that he has is mine!

Let us, then, seek daily to realize our union to Christ — that we are members of his body; and let us obtain mercy and grace from him to help us in time of need. Then our weakness will . . .
endear his strength,
increase our dependence,
stimulate us to earnest fervent prayer,
and glorify the riches of his free grace.

This is the only true remedy!

Find It In His Grace
by Pastor Ricky Kurth

When asking for forgiveness, the world has an expression they frequently use. They say, “Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?” But to paraphrase an old saying, they are asking others to look for forgiveness in all the wrong places! “The heart is deceitful
above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jer. 17:9). Any forgiveness that someone finds there is likely to come with conditions and many strings attached.

If you are finding it difficult to forgive someone, rather than trying to find it in your heart, find it in God’s grace.

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Eph. 4:32)

Perhaps you are thinking, “Pastor, you don’t know how this brother offended me.” It’s true, I don’t. But was it more than how your sins offended God? Yet He forgave all of your sins by His grace, and now asks you to forgive your brother by grace. God was “satisfied” with the payment Christ made on the cross for your brother’s offense (Isa. 53:11), and has forgiven him for what he did to you. If you fail to forgive him by God’s grace, that means your standards are higher than His.

So don’t be like the world, looking for forgiveness in all the wrong places. If your brother’s sin “abounded” against you, let God’s grace “much more abound” (Rom. 5:20), even as it did when God forgave you. “Receive not the grace of God in vain” (2 Cor. 6:1). Let it abound in your life to others. Be a grace believer in the highest sense of the name.

A beloved child--watched over, cared for, supplied and defended!

(Charles Spurgeon)

"The Lord takes pleasure in His people!" Psalm 149:4

How comprehensive is the love of Jesus! There is no part of His people's interests that He does not consider; and there is nothing that concerns their welfare, which is not important to Him. Not merely does He think of you, believer, as an immortal being--but as a mortal being, also. Do not deny it or doubt it: "The very hairs of your head are all numbered." "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delights in His way." Believer, rest assured that the heart of Jesus cares about your common affairs.

The breadth of His tender love is such that you may resort to Him in all matters; for as a father pities his children, so does He pity you. Oh, what a heart is His--which comprehends all the diverse and innumerable concerns of all His redeemed people!

Do you think that you can measure the love of Christ? Think of what His love has brought you--justification, adoption, sanctification and eternal life! The riches of His goodness are unsearchable--you shall never be able to count them out or even conceive of them all. Oh, the breadth of the love of Christ! You are no desolate wanderer, but a beloved child--watched over, cared for, supplied and defended by your Lord!

"You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book!" Psalm 56:8

Once our coalition forces were withdrawn34, Barack Obama’s “moment of success” in Iraq became just that. When Obama won re-election, in part thanks to his administration’s Benghazi cover-up, we saw the further deterioration of conditions in the Middle East that led militants to declare themselves a sovereign Islamic State, better known as ISIS or ISIL. For three harrowing years, much of Iraq and Syria was under the control of this rump thugocracy.

On the other side of the Iraq frontier, Iran was sufficiently emboldened by Obama’s hands-off policies — as well as $1.7 billion in American cash — to itself meddle in Iraq’s affairs35. Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran was the icing on the cake, so much so that treasonous former Secretary of State John Kerry has encouraged the Iranian leaders to simply wait out the Trump administration36 in the belief that some subsequent president will undo what Trump has done.

The success of Trump’s strategy in dismantling the Islamic State — which allowed those on the ground to run the war rather than DC-based bureaucrats — worked brilliantly in a military sense. But the global War on Terror is an asymmetrical battle, which explains why terrorist incidents, while down worldwide, have increased in severity and frequency in certain areas. (An annex37 to the Country Reports on Terrorism points out that, while still a small number in comparison to world hotspots, deaths or injuries from terror attacks were significantly higher year-over-year in the United Kingdom and Spain, while France also had a 59% increase in the number of attacks.)

Notably, Western Europe has taken in a huge number of Middle Eastern migrants in the last decade.

Undeterred, President Trump is planning to ratchet up pressure on Iran, including the restoration of the Iranian oil embargo38, which had been lifted as part of the Obama deal. But harsher measures may be required to curb Iran’s malevolence, because, as Ambassador Sales noted, “Iran uses terrorism as a tool of its statecraft. It has no reservations about using that tool on any continent.” While Iranian leadership will be in New York for the upcoming UN General Assembly meeting, there are no plans for talks between the Iranians and the Trump administration regarding this or other issues — so they may be taking Kerry’s advice.

Iran isn’t the whole problem, though. Wrapping up a question-and-answer session on the release of the report, Ambassador Sales, who’s also the State Department’s coordinator for counterterrorism, was asked about a domestic threat: “I think all three of them [al-Qaida, ISIS, and Iran] have both the capability and intent [to carry out domestic terror attacks],” he replied, “so the key question then becomes: What are we doing about it? And I think there’s a suite of tools that are useful against all three of those diverse threat streams.”

Those tools include stopping their flow of money, cutting off terrorist travel, and using law enforcement to investigate, prosecute, and incarcerate suspected terrorists. In other words, tools that the previous administration either lacked the will to employ or, worse, were complicit in working against. But at least there’s now evidence that a new approach has turned the tide in the Long War.

Rich Lowry: “At its best, our system of justice judges each individual — the accuser and the accused — on the basis of the evidence and with an adversarial process that has proved over the centuries to be the best way to ascertain the truth. The problem is that Ford’s accusation doesn’t seem particularly provable, and the Democratic-media complex isn’t very interested in proving it. It wants to take her truthfulness as a given, as a matter of cosmic and gender equity. ‘I believe the survivor,’ says Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal. It would be accurate for him to say, ‘I believe Ford is a survivor.’ But the point is to take rhetorical and political advantage of her alleged victimhood before it has been established — indeed, to use her assumed victimhood to foreclose any serious questioning of whether she is a victim or not. We’re seeing, in effect, the importation of the kangaroo court colleges use to adjudicate such cases to the United States Senate.”

Upright: “Ford’s demand is, to put it simply, out of line. … There is no precedent for a quid pro quo demand for testimony by a witness. [Ford] does not have the right to set conditions before testifying under oath.” —Georgetown law professor (and Democrat) Jonathan Turley

Upright II: “I believe [Ford] has to show up on Monday. If she doesn’t show up on Monday she has violated [Kavanaugh’s] core right to confront his accuser. If he shows up, what’s he going to respond to? News reports? She has to go under oath.” —Harvard law professor (and Democrat) Alan Dershowitz

For the record: “If the FBI wants to investigate things that need investigation there is much behavior from the Bill and Hillary Clinton era that would keep agents busy and produce results of interest to the public and law enforcement, including alleged Chinese hacking of Hillary’s emails while she was secretary of state, Uranium One scandal, foreign gifts to the Clinton Foundation and so much more.” —Cal Thomas

Blind squirrel finds a nut: “To President Trump’s point, I mean, there’s a deep state feel to this, right?” —NBC reporter Jonathan Allen

Braying Jackass: “We never had a president who was engaged in this kind of behavior. I mean, he’s not telling the truth. He keeps changing his mind. He’s sabotaging the world order in many respects. … Something’s got to happen to this guy, because if we don’t get rid of him, he’s going to undermine America and even the world.” —California Gov. Jerry Brown

Accurate — minus the “ir”: “Of course the presidency will be something I consider. It would be irresponsible not to.” —Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ)

And last… “It wasn’t supposed to go this far. Senate Republicans were supposed to buckle. Trump was supposed to get wobbly. Kavanaugh was supposed to have dropped out by now. Senate Democrats had no contingency plan for a scenario in which people demanded evidence.” —Sean Davis

Socialist Resistance Bureaucrats ‘Can’t, Like, Get Fired’1

Nate Jackson

Bureaucrats are hard to fire. Whether it’s the EPA employee2 who browsed porn all day, IRS employees who stole from taxpayers3 or targeted conservatives4, or CFPB bureaucrats resisting President Donald Trump by forming a children’s literature-inspired “Dumbledore’s Army5,” public-union employees have great job security.

Evidently, that’s also true for bureaucrats who, instead of doing their jobs, spend all day working for the Democratic Socialists of America. They’re part of what one employee boasts is “a little resistance movement” inside the government.

And leftists scoff at the idea of a “deep state.”

Columnist David Limbaugh notes6 the latest undercover videos by the infamous James O'Keefe and his Project Veritas:

[One] video features State Department employee Stuart Karaffa, a smarmy, self-proclaimed socialist using his government position to resist official Trump administration policies. Karaffa is a member of the Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America. …

He admits to drafting DSA communications at his worksite. “I’m careful about it,” says Karaffa. “I don’t leave a paper trail, like I leave emails, and like any press s—t that comes up, I leave that until after 5:30. But as soon as 5:31 hits, got my, like, draft messages ready to send out.” …

But what comes next is way worse and ought to infuriate all federal taxpayers. “I have nothing to lose,” he adds. “It’s impossible to fire federal employees.”

But wait; there’s more. Another video shows another DSA activist talking about making social-media posts for the organization all day instead of working. “No one knows I spent six hours yesterday doing social media for DSA,” he bragged.

And Limbaugh also records:

Project Veritas exposes Department of Justice paralegal Allison Hrabar reportedly using government hardware and software as part of her socialist activism. … Hrabar, also a member of Metro DC DSA, was supposedly one of those who chased7 Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen from a D.C.-area restaurant. That was beyond despicable. Hrabar allegedly uses the LexisNexis search engine on her work computer to find home addresses for DSA protests. … Hrabar smugly brags that as an employee of the DOJ, “We can’t, like, get fired.”

It’s outrageous enough to have active and open socialists working in the bowels of government in the first place. But it’s at least as big a problem that employees like this, who are at best dead weight on taxpayers and at worst actively undermining constitutional Rule of Law, “can’t, like, get fired.”

Just Erase Debt With Fuzzy Math8

With the latest estimates projecting our national debt of $21 trillion to reach more than $30 trillion by 2025, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have begun embracing a dubious coping mechanism known as Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). As National Review explains9, “MMT essentially says that the government’s capacity to finance its debt is limitless. Since the U.S. government is the sole printer of dollars, it faces no binding revenue constraint because more dollars can always be printed.” Apparently money does grow on trees — or at least Treasury Department printing presses.

The fact that this MMT concept has been embraced by leftists like Sen. Bernie Sanders (Socialist-VT) shouldn’t surprise anyone — not when they’re out pitching new entitlements with a 10-year, $40 trillion price tag — but the fact that it’s begun to gain traction among some Republicans is rather alarming. Even hard-left economist Paul Krugman warns against MMT, calling it “a recipe for very high inflation, perhaps even hyperinflation.” No kidding.

The obvious motivation behind lawmakers’ acceptance of this flawed concept is that it absolves them of guilt for their lack of fiscal restraint and for adding to our nation’s massive debt. But those who believe MMT to be a debtor’s “get out of jail free” card should be reminded that they’re not playing with Monopoly money.

The Good News on Terrorism29

Michael Swartz

While there are no doubt many millions around the globe who reflexively dislike President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, many of those critics in certain strife-torn nations such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, and Syria should thank him for the terrorist attacks that never happened there.

Upon release of the latest edition of an annual report30 called Country Reports on Terrorism, State Department Ambassador-at-Large Nathan A. Sales explained31 that, compared to 2016, “the total number of terrorist attacks worldwide in 2017 decreased by 23 percent. Similarly, the total deaths due to terrorist attacks decreased by 27 percent.” That’s very significant progress in one year, but there’s a good reason for it, as Sales elaborated further.

“2017 saw the United States and a global coalition accomplish major efforts against ISIS. Ninety-nine percent of the territory ISIS once held in Iraq and Syria has now been liberated. Approximately 50 percent of those gains were achieved since January of 2017,” said Sales, adding, “Similarly, more than 7.7 million people have been liberated from ISIS’ brutal rule — approximately 4.5 million in Iraq and 3.2 million in Syria. Of those 7.7 million people, an estimated 5 million have been liberated since 2017.”

In a year’s time, then, Trump’s change in strategy took a population that’s on par with that of South Carolina out from under the boot of the brutal, short-lived Islamic State’s caliphate. It should have been headline news32, right?

Of course it wasn’t, nor did the crack investigative reporters who drool over the latest details of a long-ago Trump dalliance ever bother to look into why the Islamic State grew to be a threat in the first place. (Hint: It was the guy who most recently tried to take credit33 for the resurgent Trump economy.)

The Similitude of God

“Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.” (James 3:9)

Here inserted within a very sober condemnation of the misuse of our God-given privilege of speech is what seems almost an incidental reference to the image of God in man. It is not a trivial reference, however, but very significant.

It tells us that even though the image of God in man has been severely marred by sin, it is still there! That is, man is eternal just as God is eternal, and we will all continue to exist forever, either in the presence of God, or away from His presence. That “image” is not shared with animals, even the higher animals. The latter do have a body, soul (in the sense of mind), and spirit (in the sense of breath), but they do not possess “the image of God” that was specially created in man alone after all the animals had been created (note Genesis 1:21, 27).

Another implication is that the word “similitude” includes the meaning of a physical resemblance. While God in His full essence is omnipresent and therefore invisible to human eyes, it is still true that, when God became man, He took on an actual physical body. Furthermore, our Lord Jesus, God the Son, still is “that same Jesus” and therefore still in that body (note Acts 1:11; 1 John 3:2; etc.).

Since His incarnation and His work of salvation were planned by the triune God “before the foundation of the world” (1 Peter 1:20), man was apparently created in the image of that body that Christ had planned to take on when He would eventually become man.

That being the case, our bodies are even more sacred than otherwise we might have assumed, and it is indeed a serious matter to misuse the tongue or any other member of the body, which is made after the similitude of Christ. HMM

An Offensive Question by James Smith
From Grace Gems - Free and Public Domain:
Very Old - But Beautiful and Timeless Treasures.

An Offensive Question

James Smith

"Look!" the man exclaimed. "I told you once. Didn't you listen? Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become His disciples, too?"

Then they cursed him and said, "You are His disciple — but we are disciples of Moses!" John 9:27-28

This question was asked to the Jews — by the man whom Jesus had healed of blindness — and it stung them exceedingly! They despised the thought of being the disciples of Jesus.

But this question may, perhaps, be asked to the reader, without giving so much offence. Will you, reader, be the disciple of Jesus?

His wisdom is infinite!

His power is omnipotent!

His authority is universal!

His beneficence is unbounded!

His disposition is most gentle and meek!

He performs the most surprising miracles!

He teaches the most important and valuable truths!

He now sits at the right-hand of God, and he saves all His disciples with an everlasting salvation!

What do you say? Will you be His disciple? If so . . .
you must surrender yourself, and your all, unto Him;
you must be ready to suffer with, and die for Him!
You must be willing to . . .
  embrace His doctrines,
  submit to be ruled by His precepts,
  imitate his example, and
  observe all His institutions!

A true disciple is teachable, and loves His Master above all. He . . .
studies to know His will,
watches His eye,
waits upon Him,
fears to offend Him,
delights to please Him,
confidently trusts Him,
zealously imitates Him,
cheerfully obeys Him,
is most happy when favored with His presence, and
will by no means leave Him — but cleaves to Him with full purpose of heart.

Will you be His disciple? If so, you must obey Him — you must do what He commands . . .
out of respect to His authority,
from love to His will,
from deference to His wisdom,
from zeal for His honor,
with faith in His promise,
fearing His frown.

His commands must rule your heart and life . . .
though your carnal nature may dislike them,
though friends may persuade you to neglect them,
though enemies may oppose and persecute you for regarding them,
and though for a time you may suffer loss for attending to them.

Will you be His disciple? If so, you must unite with those who already sit at His feet, and they are, generally speaking, poor — not many wealthy are called. They are despised — for they walk contrary to the maxims of the world. They are often deeply afflicted, "For whom the Lord loves — He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives."

If you will be His disciple, you must forsake . . .
all your present follies,
all your vain companions,
and all your carnal pleasures.

You must publicly profess your faith in, and obedience to Him; and you must engage to attend His worship and support His cause.

Young friend, will you be His disciple? Notwithstanding all that has been said — His disciples are happy; yes, they are the only people who are truly happy. They may be placed in the most painful circumstances, and seem to be most miserable of all men — but there is a secret something within which supports, animates, and cheers them at the worst! The Christian's worst — is better than the worldling's best!

His disciples are all honorable; they are the sons of God, they are kings in their minority, they are the heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ — to whom He has willed all His vast and eternal possessions! It will take a whole eternity, to enjoy all that God has given them — all that the blood of Jesus has secured to them!

His disciples are safe, for . . .
He throws around them the shield of His favor;
He places beneath them His everlasting arms;
He keeps fixed upon them His piercing, sleepless eye!

Thousands have entered His school, and been taught by His Spirit! Will you also be His disciples? Abraham was! David was! Paul was! Will you? "This is what the Lord says — your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow!"

He never turned away one who sincerely sought to enter His school. Nor was one ever rejected because He could not teach them His lessons. He receives every applicant — and He makes scholars of all who enter. He teaches them to . . .
avoid sin,
love holiness,
walk with God,
overcome their foes, and
leads them all at length, to sit down in the glorious kingdom of God!

God’s Gifts To His Church
by Pastor Paul M. Sadler

“And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry.”
— Ephesians 4:11-13

Paul warns us about those who, whether wittingly or unwittingly, would spread unsound doctrine among us. We are living in a time when some of the brethren seem to deem it important to find something new. Of course, it is not our intent to discourage anyone in regard to exercising the “Berean spirit.” However, care should be taken not to undermine the foundation upon which our faith rests. We do well to remember that the “Doctrinal Statement” our forefathers forged for us was a product of intense debate with the denominational leaders of their day. Each plank of the statement was carefully crafted as a defense and confirmation of the Fundamentals of the faith and Paul’s gospel. Therefore, let us not be too quick to challenge those things which are “tried and true.”

At this late hour, there are those who tell us that the “gifts” of evangelists, pastors and teachers or pastor-teachers are no longer in operation today. Some have even gone as far to say that the enabling “gifts” have also passed. This flies in the face of our “Doctrinal Statement,” which has served us well for over fifty years. It states:

“The gifts necessary for the ministry of the Body of Christ are those enumerated in Eph. 4:7-16. Of these, only the gifts of evangelists and pastor-teachers are in operation today. All the sign gifts of the Acts period, such as tongues, prophecy and healing (I Cor. 12:1-31), being temporary in character, have ceased (I Cor. 13:8-11).”

Here in Ephesians, one of Paul’s later epistles, the apostle sets the tone for the course of this dispensation. Clearly, the context of this portion concerns itself with the gifts God has given to His Church. It is true that the gifts of “apostles” and “prophets” passed with the completion of the Word of God (I Cor. 13:8-13 cf. Col. 1:25). Once the Word of God was dispensed, these two offices and the gifted men who held them were nonessential. We now have something far better, the written revelation that they handed down to us, which is to be obeyed in matters of faith and practice.

There is no indication, whatsoever, that the gifts of evangelists, pastors and teachers have ever been withdrawn. In fact, Paul plainly states their purpose: “For the perfecting [maturing] of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying [building up] of the Body of Christ.” And how long shall this continue? “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge [Gr. epignosis — full knowledge] of the Son of God” (Eph. 4:13).

Surely, it could not be said there has ever been a period in Church history, past or present, that the “unity of the faith” has been attained, much less a “full knowledge” of the Son of God. But this is exactly what we are being asked to believe; that is, the unity of the faith has been attained. Perhaps, we should put this to the Berean test.

Creation: Some believe God created all things in six literal twenty- four hour days. Others teach the “ruin and reconstruction theory” that God created, destroyed and re-created. This is commonly called the “gap theory” which places millions or billions of years between the original creation and the re-creation.

Redemption: The battle has raged for centuries over whether Christ died for the sins of all mankind or merely for the sins of the elect. Which do you believe?

Things to Come: It is well known there are those who believe the events covered in the Book of Revelation are entirely futuristic. Many would challenge this assertion as absurd. They teach that the early chapters of the Apocalypse describe the various stages of Church history up to the present “Laodicean” age. If we agree that there are two camps of interpretation on any Biblical subject, then we have yet to come into the unity of the faith.

There is not one scintilla of evidence that the “unity of the faith” has ever been attained by all. Even in Paul’s day, the saints were wielding the sword of the Spirit against one another (II Tim. 1:15 cf. 2:17-19). In addition, we must inquire: Has the Church come to a full knowledge of the Son of God? That is, of His person, work and present heavenly ministry. We shall answer this question with a question: Has the Church, which is His Body, acknowledged the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the Mystery?

The “unity of the faith” and a “full knowledge” of Christ is a goal set before us that will never be fully attained until the Rapture. Thus, the responsibility of Gods gifts to His Church is to proclaim the whole counsel of God in light of the Pauline epistles. Why? that the saints might be established in the faith!

There is also an experiential side to this truth as well. When God called me into the ministry nearly thirty years ago, it was definitive. Other pastors have testified of similar experiences, which confirms that the “gifts and callings of God are without repentance” (Rom. 11:29). Beware of those who would rob you of this precious truth!

Just a little bit, and off you go!

(Charles Spurgeon)

"His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night." Psalm 1:2

Do not many of you read the Bible in a very hurried way--just a little bit, and off you go! Do you not soon forget what you have read, and lose what little effect it seemed to have?

How few of you are resolved to get at its soul, its juice, its life, its essence--and to drink in its meaning. Well, if you do not do that--then your reading is miserable reading, dead reading, unprofitable reading; it is not reading at all, the name would be misapplied. May the blessed Spirit give you repentance concerning this thing.

Meditation and careful thought, exercise us and strengthen the soul for the reception of the yet more lofty truths.

We must meditate, brethren. These grapes will yield no wine until we tread upon them.
These olives must be put under the wheel, and pressed again and again--that the oil may flow therefrom.

In a dish of nuts, you may know which nut has been eaten by a worm--because there is a little hole which the worm has punctured through the shell. It is just a little hole, and then inside there is the living worm eating up the kernel.

In the same way, it is a grand thing to bore through the shell of the letter of Scripture--and then to live inside feeding upon the kernel.

I would wish to be such a little worm as that, living within and upon the Word of God, having bored my way through the shell, and having reached the innermost mystery of the blessed gospel. The Word of God is always most precious to the man who most lives upon it.

Beloved, never be satisfied with a sound creed--but desire to have it engraved on the tablets of your heart.

The doctrines of grace are good, but the grace of the doctrines is better still. See that you have it, and be not content with the idea that you are well-instructed--until you so understand the doctrine that you have felt its spiritual power.

O living Christ, make this a living Word to me. Your Word is life, but not without the Holy Spirit. I may know this book of Yours from beginning to end, and repeat it all from Genesis to Revelation--and yet it may be a dead book, and I may be a dead soul.

Oh, cling to Scripture. Scripture is not Christ, but it is the silken clue which will lead you to Him. Follow its leadings faithfully.

The Daily Wire reports11, “Cameron Kasky told Fox News radio on Wednesday that he has left the organization that he helped create and that he has regrets about some of the things that he has said since he entered the public spotlight.” Kasky, you’ll recall, was praised by leftists for going after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) at a town hall gathering shortly after the shooting. He now says “that was my biggest flaw.” He’s even pursuing reconciliation. “Kasky said he would redo the conversation that he had with Rubio and that he has plans to meet with him next month where he’ll bring up how he spoke to him during the town hall event,” according to the Wire.

Kasky went on to say:

This summer when March for Our Lives went on … tour … I met that person in Texas who’s got that semiautomatic weapon because that’s how they like to protect their family. I met the 50-some-odd-percent of woman who are pro-life, even though I thought it was preposterous that a woman could be pro-life and not pro-choice at the time. I learned that a lot of our issues politically come from a lack of understanding of other perspectives and also the fact that so often young conservatives and young liberals will go into debate, like I said earlier, trying to beat the other one as opposed to come to an agreement.

The Wire also notes that Kasky will “start a new podcast called ‘Cameron Knows Nothing,’ where he will host discussions with people on both sides of the political spectrum on current political issues.” This is what maturity looks like — not the egregious grandstanding of ignorant adolescents like David Hogg. And unlike Hogg, Kasky deserves credit for his open-mindedness — even if the media will uplift only one of them as a role model.

Concealed-Carry Permit Holder Praised for Helping Police in Shootout27
A man with a concealed-carry license was commended for coming to the aid of Cicero police who were engaged in a shootout with a man who shot and wounded an officer near the Stevenson Expressway Thursday, authorities said. Cicero Police Officer Luis Duarte, 31, was shot four times during the encounter near the 4200 block of South Cicero Avenue during the evening rush hour, but it might have been worse if the armed citizen hadn’t stepped in, officials said.

Gary Bauer: “While [Lisa Page and Peter Strzok] were convinced that Trump would not be elected, they nevertheless concluded that too much was at stake. So they needed an insurance policy to destroy his presidency, just in case. That was a fake narrative of Russian collusion. I believe this uproar over a 36-year-old accusation is evidence of another ‘insurance policy.’ Democrats lied about what Kavanaugh said. They leaked information. They encouraged thugs to disrupt the hearings. Now, when all else has failed, they come up with a decades-old charge to besmirch a good man and embarrass his family. Shame!”

Gross hypocrisy: “There can’t be one set of rules for Democrats and one set of rules for Republicans. … I remember back in the Thomas hearing when Senator Bird was asked what he was going to do, and he said in a situation like this we should give the benefit of the doubt to the court and the country. And that’s what the Republicans should be doing right now. … And that means have an investigation that will then lead to a hearing that will then lead to a vote if appropriate.” —Hillary Clinton, wife and fierce defender of a serial adulterer and accused rapist

Which makes Hillary perhaps the dumbest person to ever run for president.)
