Title: What would it be like?
Post by: Whitehorse on December 27, 2003, 02:56:44 PM
...if we all met one day. A big CU get-together. Family, hot dogs, and balloons for the kids...What would that do? Would we be surprised?

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that we have a 98-year-old grandmother sharing the blessings of the faith with, say, an inner-city ex-gang member whose hair looks like a tree root. What would that be like?

What would happen when we came back to CU? (Just a wierd thought I had today.)

Will the Cyclops be there?  ;)

I think it would be awesome!  :D

an inner-city ex-gang member whose hair looks like a tree root.

   :D

And why ballons for just the kids?  How come is it, that kids only alwyas get the balloons?

Hmm, nope, seriously, that's an interesting question.  Maybe if one of us win the lottery, we can extend a general all-expense paid invitation, and find out?

hehe.  This would be vewee, vewee, interesting.   :-\

That sounds good. In the meantime, I think it would be great fun to speculate and paint word pictures of what everyone is like. Then each person we're describing can have a good laugh. Who wants to go first?

Word pictures.  Hmmm.

Well, bep reminds me of Captain Kangeroo.  But probably more stern.   :-[   He's probably very lovaable for his family and relatives.   :)

Wh is probably like, um, impatient, sharp, quick, and constantly moving about, athletic.  Probably brunet and looks like Debra Winger, but not that old.

All has already told us--pudgy, balding--likes to sit around a lot and watch television.   Probably likes potato chips.  :-[

sincereheart is probably like WH, 'cept blond and a bit older.  Maybe not as antsy, probably not as atheletic, but prolly not overweight.

Tib is stocky, built, maybe muscle-bound.  Dark hair--like Samson.  Couldn't tell you what his face looks like, tho he spends a lot of time online, so he must be pretty ugly.  Tho all the girls seem to like him which is usually how it is.   ::)

      ;D

Sym's the only taker, on the word pictures, I guess. Debra Winger??? Hehe.

Let's see..... Symphony must be a male.  ;D

I won't guess on the age thing.  ;)

Tries to be athletic but never has been the athletic type so he watches what he eats to maintain his youthful physique.

Sapphire W3APON... Dark hair and dark eyes?

Ollie.... Uh, I need help here!

I have NEVER been blonde! :P 'Cept for the hair turning white which my spouse says is me turning platinum blonde.  ;)

 ;D

Okay. Sym is...an intellectual sort. Health guru, maybe. I say dark hair.

Ollie is an intellectual, too, of a more stoic sort. Age? I have no clue.

Sincereheart. Energetic, fun-loving...

Sym's better at this kind of thing than me!

Tib is a blond. Short but stocky, a powerhouse. Everyone runs when they see him coming.

Sapph, I envision with dark hair, wears t-shirts a lot, peaceful yet cynical. The stuff all great writers are made of.

(Am I getting any better?)

With hidden playfulness..... ;D Brown hair. Age? Hmmmm..... Late 20's?

Just call me Bond....James Bond.

So you're bald?   :P

Sapph, I envision with dark hair, wears t-shirts a lot, peaceful yet cynical. The stuff all great writers are made of.
And well-mannered and mostly quiet till you get him going - then he can get silly. I'm not sure about the tees, though - unless they're tucked and unwrinkled. Definitely not sloppy!

How about ebia?  ???

Title: Re:What would it be like?
Post by: Whitehorse on January 04, 2004, 12:51:34 AM
yes. Hidden playfulness with Ollie, which is wonderful. I was thinking older, though. I was thinking maybe forties...

Sapph is a young guy. So I can't picture him in a button-up shirt, much less a tie. Something with pictures on it. Movie T shirts and music t shirts. Maybe university or military. Yeah-military.

Me-I like bandannas and head wraps. You know, the kind that go over your head and you knot them in the back. I want a black one with a jolly roger on the forehead, just because I think it would be incredibly cool for climbing. But the company I order from is out of those. They just have the plain black now.  :-\ But where else do you get the chance to wear one...

Wow, Whitehorse, I'm surprised. I do have dark blonde. Ok, I'm scared... ;D Anyways, you're gender is a mystery to us all. You know, the way you discribe yourself, you sound like one of my profs. He is a short little man who like to go hiking and looks like WIllie Nelson.

BEP I have pictures is a slightly pudgy guy, not balding, but gray, and walks with a limp.

I picture Willow and Sapph as 2 friends of mine, Racheal and Smitty. Racheal, dark blonde hair, brown eyes, short, shaply, and a atheltic. Smitty, taller, skinny, likes his black, and wears his trench coat more then underwear. He has brown hair and blue eyes.

I always thought ebia was a Guy from New Zealand, but a few people corrected me, it's a women from English. So now, I picture her as a small, skinny women with black hair and brown eyes.

You were nearly sort of right with N.Z. - I live in Australia (see my profile: The Great South Land of the Holy Spirit = Australia), but yes, I'm English really.   I've never revealed my gender on these boards.

Title: Re:What would it be like?
Post by: Whitehorse on January 04, 2004, 04:59:15 PM
Well, I don't look Willie Nelson. ;D I'm pretty certain of that! Actually, I'm very clean cut. I wear cologne and the full nine; it's just that I like bandanas, black, and silver jewelry. The problem is, I can't get away with wearing these things whenever I want to. I'd scare the living bajeebers out of everyone. But I like to wear a silver fish-it's my favorite. Very simple.

Title: Re:What would it be like?
Post by: sincereheart on January 04, 2004, 05:20:29 PM
So ebia and Whitehorse are gender neutral... ;)

And ebia being a math(s) teacher doesn't narrow it down-
Hmmmm....

And Whitehorse looking like Willie gets me stuck in the ROFL stage.  :-X

Somehow I don't picture Sapphire as dressing 'goth'... :-X And I definitely don't see him in a tie, either. Just clean and casual, never sloppy. Khaki's, maybe?  :-\

Does Tibby wear glasses?

Apparently ollie's age has been determined as somewhere between infancy and elderly.  ;D

And just what is a 'jolly roger'?

Title: Re:What would it be like?
Post by: Whitehorse on January 04, 2004, 05:50:06 PM
This is a jolly roger. Perfect for climbing, but you really can't wear it anywhere else.

but yes, I'm English really  *sigh* Can't cha just hear ebia saying that.  The "really" gives him/her away instantly.  Like finishing a sentence with "actually", which the English are wont to do with, um, enduring frequency.   :-[

Sincereheart, no I'm definitely not "gender neutral." I'm most definitely the gender that I am; I just don't reveal it online because I want to minister to and encourage others without anyone getting any wrong ideas.

Hehe, the skull is the jolly roger, although actually the bear might not be such a bad thing to strap on either, if it's a big climb.  ;D

And that's a good description, except I have gray eyes.

lol j/k

Now I just need to see how much Sapph is like Smitty. I don't know if Sapph is "goth" per say, but maybe in a counter-culture along those lines. Punk, Metalhead, Anarchist, one of the group.   20 bucks says he shops at Hottopic at least once a month.  ;D

Does anyone remember the old kids game "Geuss Who?" lol ;D

Punk? - I light firecrackers with those on the 4th of July.   :D

Platform shoes if you really want to make a fashion statement.

Tie-dyed bell-bottom jeans.

Tee-shirts with the sleeves rolled up to your shoulder.

A & W rootbeer.

The drive-in movie with your honey.

Driving dad's station wagon on your first date.

Tiny black and white TV with only 1 channel that went off at 10:00 PM.

Rabbit-ears to fine tune that one TV channel.

"The Shadow" on the radio.

I'll check back later to see if I have to go to my room.   ;D

Alrighty. Here I am. I think it was sincereheart's first post about me that best described me. Let's see...

I have brown ear-length hair with highlights, glasses, brown eyes, I don't have any "movie t-shirts," I certainly don't shop at Hot Topic, and I am most definitely not "goth." I am quiet, for the most part, and am generally anti-social. I am not an anarchist by any means, I like my music (which is not primarily punk or metal), and am maybe slightly counter-culture.

Alright, how's that?

As a nice, buttoned-up, tucked in shirt.
Buttoned up, but not tucked in, in a nice-yet-sloppy look.
As a jacket, unbuttoned, with a shirt under it (I normally where a under-tee under them anyways)
“Lumberjack-style”, with the sleeves rolled up
Early 90’s kilt, tying it around my waist

There you have it, the way Tibby where the same style up shirt everyday, and no one knows it ;D

I like the turban idea, too. I don't need a spling, thou. I'll just go back to college and see if one of the cute little nursing majors will nursing me back to health ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)

Wow, this thread has blossomed.

Oh wow, bep:

Tee-shirts with the sleeves rolled up to your shoulder.

With a pack of Marlboros stuck up under one sleeve.

A & W rootbeer.

Oh, yeah, and Papa Burgers, Mama Burgers and Baby Burgers.  Then came Teen Burgers(bacon bits and cheese ).

Tiny black and white TV with only 1 channel that went off at 10:00 PM.

Hmm.  No, the TV was humongous.  Just the screen itself was tiny.

Rabbit-ears to fine tune that one TV channel.

Boy, tell me about it, bep.  *sigh*  Tell me about it.

And all the exciting TV shows were on the OTHER channels.   Like Man from U.N.C.L.E.  *sigh*  They don't make shows like that anymore.

Nope, bep you don't have to go to your room.  You get a medal for this one.  GOOD post.  Officer bep, FRONT AND CENTER!   :)

Whitehorse:  Remember when they served it in those frosty glass mugs? That was great.

Oh YEAH!   And if you ordered it to go, in a quart, the waxed cardboard container(with orange and black stripes), was a funnel.  Knock out the bottom; you have a bull horn.

But the frosty mugs were nice, with that foam head on top.  mmmmm.

Hmm, I'm not getting the Jolly Roger thing.  Maybe Symphony have to go to HIS room?  Oh, wait.  I'm already there.   ::)

And why the skull and cross bones on the Jolly Roger?

I thot only President Bush and Yalies were allowed in the Skull and Bones fraternity.   :-[ (seriously, THAT doesn't sound too hot  :-\).

Whitehorse. I don't think Sapph is goth, either. Yeah, let's get Sapph in on the discussion here.

Hmmm.  I'm being contradicted.  *sigh*

Sapph is definitely goth.  The sarcasm.  The dry, dry, sometimes witty(notice, I said sometimes), banter.  Oh, definitely goth.

Oops.  Sapph says he's defintely not goth.  Hmmm.

Okay, so if not goth, then, Oh, okay, I got it.  Blue, long sleeve all-cotton pennington button down collar dress shirt; khakies; penny loafers.  With no socks.  ::)  Right?

Tibby:  Chicks really dig the towel head thing  Hehe, you mean like:

I don't smoke dope,
I don't drink bourbon,
All I wanna do,
Is shake my turban.
    ???

Ohhhh, I see, ebia.  Strine is the language of Australia.  Hmmm.  Interesting.  Very.   "Aye, myte.  Let's put a cupla shrimps on the ole barbie."   ;D

sincereh: Now Ben, in a few years I'll start preparing the way for you to become my son-in-law!

Hmmm.  So THAT's how it works.  The mothers-in-law are the ones who pull the strings.  Hmmm(scratches head, stares out window).  Why isn't that news??

Sapph:  tell everyone who wants to talk to me to shut up

Hmm.  Definitely goth.

Oklahoma Howdy to Symphony,

 :D

You are completely correct about that old television. It was the screen that was tiny, and the rest was huge and weighed a ton. There were probably enough tubes in it to supplement heating in the winter.   :D

Yes, I remember the trips to A&W being quite a treat. It was about a half mile from our house when I was growing up. I did have a few of those baby burgers. Money was so short then that A&W usually involved a good report card or something else good. I guess that a kid would be considered deprived these days if they didn't go out to eat 2 or 3 times a week. WOW, have things changed!

Back then, it was a "swamp-cooler", only if you were lucky. Electricity was expensive, so they only turned it on after the temperature got over 100 degrees. If dad told you to go clean the swamp-cooler, you got right on it since you knew it might be turned on.   :D

Oklahoma Howdy to Symphony,

Quote
Nope, bep you don't have to go to your room.  You get a medal for this one.  GOOD post.  Officer bep, FRONT AND CENTER!

 :D

Could I by any chance trade in that medal for one of those old Heathkit crystal radios? You know, the type you make from a kit? The one I want has an extra long antennae and the obvious secret ear-piece so you can listen to it in the middle of the night. These were WAY COOL! Let's see if anyone has a clue what I'm talking about.   :D

BEP, you were in your room? No wonder you were missing. We should send you to your room for going to your room, but that would defeat the purpose! ;D

Oh, yes-I remember those kits well. From Radio Shack. Along with the worst batteries known to man. They had 'em in big bins, sorted by type, and they were a quarter a piece. This before the akaline, obviously. We timed a nine-volt battery to five minutes of life. Never bought Radio Shack batteries again!

Hehe-The obvious earpiece-LOL!

And don't forget-no drive in window at the restaurants back then. My best friend's son thinks we are ancient. He is the only kid in his class, apparently, who knows what a record is.

Sym:

I don't smoke dope,
I don't drink bourbon,
All I wanna do,
Is shake my turban

LOL!!! That's so delightfully awful-I love it!! ;D

Quote
Hmm, I'm not getting the Jolly Roger thing.  Maybe Symphony have to go to HIS room?  Oh, wait.  I'm already there.
And why the skull and cross bones on the Jolly Roger?

Hehe! Well, the jolly roger is the skull and crossbones. While the history of the symbol is unsavory to say the least, today it is symbolic for something hazardous, which is probably the reason you see so much of it on people who enjoy high-risk sports. While this is most common amongst skateboarders, it fits in with the general X-treme sports culture.

So why on earth would I want to wear it? Mostly to be all things to all men so I can be effective in sharing the gospel. (You can see how the irony might really pique interest in the person you're trying to reach.) But also because I have a side that enjoys simplicity. And it reflects a realism in me that knows we all have that appointment to keep with God. I like to be mindful of it because in a wierd way it actually enriches life. Life is ironically more joyous that way, even though the black and silver and jolly roger may have the appearance of being somber, because I live life more fully when I remember I'm not living for this world. It sets my mind on things eternal and makes me very happy, even though that might not be the first thing a person might expect when s/he sees it. But I haven't climbed for quite a while. The Lord will give me the go-ahead when the time is right. And I don't dress that way always, although I want to. I enjoy simplicity.

I was thinking Modern "Praise" but yeah, that, too.

Actually, that's more what I meant. I do kind of like some CCM.

Okay, so if not goth, then, Oh, okay, I got it.  Blue, long sleeve all-cotton pennington button down collar dress shirt; khakies; penny loafers.  With no socks.    Right?

Wrong. Your dry, dry, never witty sarcasm seems to be acting up.

Hmm.  Definitely goth.

I don't dress in all black, don't wear make-up, black lipstick, or black fingernail polish. I don't worship Ozzy Osbourne (I hate him). The only thing about me that you may even consider to be "goth" is my antisocialism. But there's more to goth than just that, I think...Trust me. If you saw me in person, "goth" would never cross your mind.

hehe.  ;)

...antisocialism...  You mean, um, like "anticommunism"?     ;D

If you saw me in person, "goth" would never cross your mind.

Oh.  Otay.

BTW, you said you were too late to get on the school newspaper?  Maybe there's something you could do to badger them into publishing you.  Maybe just start submitting a column to them weekly, maybe just one or two hundred words or so, whether they publish or not.  Writers, cartoonists, etc., are known to literally wallpaper their rooms with rejection slips.  It's the method to the madness.  (it's so competitive)
Just a thot.

We should send you to your room for going to your room,

Well, that clears things up.    :-[

Thank you, Whitehorse.  I've been waiting to quote that little ditty.  From a Time magazine article on Egyptian or Middle Eastern Elvis-wannabes.  I thot it was hilarious.  ;D

And for your explanation on the jolly roger.  Wow, I just googled it:  "Pirate flag, usually red or black and decorated with skulls, crossbones, and swords. Each pirate had his own design."

Hmmm.  But what an explanation you give there.  Quite a testamony.   Will have to come back to that.

bep, yes, the crystal radio set.  I NEVER could get a station to come in.  Just some crackling, popping.   I never did understand the principle.   ::)   The headset was made of bakelite.

That secret earpiece you speak of for me came with my trusty two transistor(yes, TWO transistor) radio--sleek, white case that would fit in your pocket.  For Christmas I got a Philco SIX transistor--that baby doll would fit in your palm, and looked just like something from Man from U.N.C.L.E.  With black leather(quality leather) case and strap.
Coolsville.  8)

Yes, our A&W was right across the street.  But we rarely went.  When we did, it was definitely a treat.  The year they added "teenburgers" to the menu, the talk of the town.   :-\

Whew.  THere is some meat in this one, that's for sure.

So when you "wear it", you mean as a shirt, or emblem?

As a conversation piece,, of sorts.

a realism in me that knows we all have that appointment to keep with God.

Hmmm.

Life is ironically more joyous that way, even though the black and silver and jolly roger may have the appearance of being somber, because I live life more fully when I remember I'm not living for this world.

Hmm.  Maybe that was my point in the At War with the Lord thread; tho for me it was expressed in doing things that I don't want to do(thus "somber")...

I enjoy simplicity  hehe.  translation:  "not a slave to fashion" ( ;D hehe --just kidding, whitehorse.  Actually, that's me.  Or, rather, perhaps the word "sloppy" might be more appropriate.  :-X)

Hmm.  An interesting statement.  Thank you, Whitehorse.  I like the irony part you allude to--the juxtaposition of opposites, to elicit a response?

For sure, wearing the skull and crossbones would definitely get me down that road apiece.

But that all IS a curious testimony to get from the jolly roger, the pirate's flag.

Antisocialism? lol, nice word. What is this thing you the "antisocialism"? Sounds like you're in that "No one like me so I will reject them first but secretly want to be like them" stage. ;)

Title: Re:What would it be like?
Post by: Whitehorse on January 13, 2004, 11:28:11 PM
Sym, I don't do it to elicit a response; it's just a reflection of a culture (climbing) that I enjoy. But the irony will be effective, you see. And it's partly being all things to all men in that way, although it will be a while before I can climb again.

I was once told that there's nothing God has made that the devil won't abuse. Well, if that's the case, there's nothing the devil can achive that can't be swiped out of his hands and returned to God. Valentine's day, for example, was a celebration of Valentine, a Roman cleric who gave his life for the gospel. This holiday has gone through secular reframing. Christmas. It's gone through secular reframing, although we've managed to keep hold of that. Well, I figure I'm going to swipe the devil's abuse out of his hands and use it to return glory to the Lord. Use the jolly roger in a way satan didn't intend. Use it to open a door for salvation. :)

No, it isn't sloppy; I'm pretty careful about my appearance. My shoes are polished, and I wear cologne. I don't wear pants that are worn out. I want to look attractive because I also want to talk to people and be available in a ministry sort of way now. Not easy since people think of me as being very stoic in the real world, but this is a departure from that.

I enjoy simplicity in the sense of elemental. Simplicity in the sense of casual and relaxed, yet polished. I hope that makes sense...

Sounds like you're in that "No one like me so I will reject them first but secretly want to be like them" stage.

My beyoootiful thread! What has happened to my beyooooootiful thread! Tibby's been trampling in the petunias again.
About that picnic...

What are we really like offscreen? Would CU members even recognize our personalities?

You first, tell us what you are like. ;D

You first, tell us what you are like. ;D
I told you. I'm boring.

A pastor visited our home one day; over the course of the evening, he tentatively asked my parents if I had a medical condition that prevented me from speaking.   ::)

I don't talk much; I have a slow tongue that doesn't always get the hang of what I'm trying to make it say. It trips over easy words and forgets the bigger ones. I also don't project my voice well, probably 'cause it gets rusty.

I have nice eyes, though, and my hearing's good. I do a great job of looking people in the face and listening to whatever they want to say. I would be an excellent conversationalist if the other party did all the speaking.  8)

Hmm, Willow, that's all very nice, but I don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about.

Hmm.

Well, I'm cantankerous like Grumpy.

I have little faith, like doubting Thomas.

I'm cowardly, like the lion.

I'm deceitful, like Judaes Iscariot.

I just realized that A4C has over 2500 posts, which is kind of sad, as most of his posts shouldn't even be considered posts at all.

That sounds good. In the meantime, I think it would be great fun to speculate and paint word pictures of what everyone is like. Then each person we're describing can have a good laugh. Who wants to go first?

One picture is worth a thousand words.

Hey, does this help get this thread back to the topic?

This is a jolly roger. Perfect for climbing, but you really can't wear it anywhere else.

That can be found on a bottle of iodine or turpentine. It defines the thing wearing it as "POISON".

Alrighty.

"Alright, how's that?"

Cold!
