Title: Poor Taste Jesus Toy
Post by: Claudius on March 19, 2004, 02:41:30 AM
 >:(

I couldn't find a better place to post this, but I think others would want to know about the mockery of our Lord this company is doing.

Urban Outfitters is selling a magnetic dress-up Jesus figure which is igniting controversy. People who buy the figure can dress the Jesus figure in a hula skirt, devil outfit, skull T-shirt and other things. The figure wears just underwear.
A man the source link identifies as Gerry e-mailed Urban Outfitters to say that this item was in extremely bad taste. The company e-mailed him back saying the item isn't meant to offend, it just reflects a diversity of opinion among customers.
There is a link on the source article if you want to see what the toy looks like. You can also vote as to if you think its in bad taste (currently 1,573 or 82% say it is, while 353 or 18% think it is not).

Yes that is in very poor taste.
I also agree that “everyone” does not have the same image of Christ but how does this “reflect(s) a diversity of opinion among customers”?
Just because I am a Mom who stays at home with the children does not mean I would have to picture or allow my children to dress a Christ doll in comfortable sweat clothes.

Oklahoma Howdy to Claudius,

I find this to be much worse than poor taste - IT'S DISGUSTING! I would hope that Urban Outfitters is some sort of a big national chain so that Christians all over the country can boycott it. I've never seen one, but I'll never spend a penny at one.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Urban Outfitters, Inc, is an innovative specialty retailer and wholesaler which offers a variety of lifestyle merchandise to highly defined customer niches through 54 Urban Retail stores in the United States, Canada, and Europe; an Urban catalog and web site (www.urbanoutfitters.com); 40 Anthropologie stores in the United States; an Anthropologie catalog and web site (www.anthropologie.com); and Free People, the Companys wholesale division, which sells its products to approximately 1,100 specialty stores, department stores and catalogs, as well as through one Free People store. The wholesale division sells its products under two labels: Free People and bdg.

UO just effectively removed me from their customer base also, some companies will do anything for publicity and their bottom line.

The other day, my boss's boss gave him something similar for my boss's birthday.  It was called G-Force Jesus.  You hang it from your rear view mirrow and its a big wood crucifix with a christ figurine holding on flying backwards.  It was just wrong, he threw it away

Urban Unfitters has lost one more customer plus everyone I can show this disgusting piece of garbage to at least those that understand any form of decency.    This goes way beyond doing anything to make a dollar and it is unfortunate that they will probably benefit in some sick way from having lots of people check this out.
