When to Pray

Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving" (Colossians 4:2).

There is no set time to pray, for it is always appropriate. Our text tells us to "continue" in prayer, and this is the same word as in Romans 12:12, which urges us to be "instant in" prayer. In fact, the admonition of I Thessalonians 5:17 is to "Pray without ceasing."

Children should pray, as did little Samuel. When the Lord called him, he could answer: "Speak; for thy servant heareth" (I Samuel 3:10). Young people should pray, as Timothy, who was exhorted by Paul to make "supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks . . . for all men" (I Timothy 2:1). Adult men should pray, as did Paul himself, who could say to the Christians of Philippi that he was "Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy" (Philippians 1:4). Old men should pray, like Simeon, and old women, like Anna, who "served God with fastings and prayers night and day" (Luke 2:25,36,37). And even dying men should pray, as did Stephen who, as he was being stoned to death, was also "calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit" (Acts 7:59).

We can pray at dawn like David, who said: "My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up" (Psalm 5:3). In a Philippian prison, "at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God" (Acts 16:25). Daniel "kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed" (Daniel 6:10). There is no time that is not a good time for prayer. One should pray in times of sorrow, and also in times of joy, as did Hannah in both circumstances (I Samuel 1:15; 2:1).

It is a most marvelous privilege that we have through Christ, that we are able to speak to the infinite God in prayer, and to know that He hears, and cares! Therefore, pray!

If any ingredient is left out

(Thomas Watson, "The Doctrine of Repentance")

"Unless you repent, you will also perish." Luke 13:5

Repentance is a grace of God's Spirit, whereby a
sinner is inwardly humbled and outwardly reformed.
Repentance is a spiritual medicine made up of
six special ingredients:
  1. Sight of sin
  2. Sorrow for sin
  3. Confession of sin
  4. Shame for sin
  5. Hatred for sin
  6. Turning from sin
If any ingredient is left out, it loses its virtue.

"I preached that they should repent and turn to God
and prove their repentance by their deeds." Acts 26:20

THE GLORY OF GOD
by John MacDuff - 1800s

"Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God." Psalm 90:2

O My Soul! Seek to fill yourself with thoughts of the Almighty. Lose yourself in the impenetrable tracts of His Glory! "Can you by searching find out God?" Can the animalcule fathom the ocean, or the worm scale the skies? Can the finite grasp the Infinite – the mortal Immortality? We can do no more than stand on the brink of the shoreless sea, and cry, "Oh the depth!" "From everlasting!" - shrouded in the great and awful mystery of eternity. Before one star revolved in its sphere - before one angel moved his wing - God was! His own infinite presence filling all space. All time, to Him, is but as the heaving of a breath - the beat of a pulse - the twinkling of an eye.

The Eternity of bliss, which is the noblest heritage of the creature, is in its nature progressive. It admits of advance in degrees of happiness and glory. Not so the Eternity of the Great Creator; He was as perfect before the birth of time, as He will be when "time shall be no longer;" - as infinitely glorious when He inhabited alone the solitudes of immensity, as He is now with the songs of angel and archangel sounding in His ear! But "who can show forth all His praise?" We can at best but lisp the alphabet of His glory. Moses, who saw more of God than most, makes it still his prayer, "I beseech you, show me Your glory." Paul, who knew more of God than other men, prays still, "that I may know Him." "Our safest eloquence," says Hooker, "concerning Him, is our silence, when we confess without confession, that His glory is inexplicable."

And is this the Being to whom I can look up with sweetest confidence, and call "My Father"? Is it this Infinite One, whom "the Heaven of Heavens cannot contain," I can call "My God"? Believer, contemplate the medium through which it is you can see the glory of God, and yet live. "No man has seen God at any time, the only -begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him." He, who dwells in light inaccessible, comes forth from the pavilion of His glory in the person of "Immanuel, God with us." In Christ, "the Image of the invisible God," the creature - yes, sinners - can gaze unconsumed on the lusters of Deity! Be it yours to glorify Him. Seek thus to fulfill the great design of your being. Let all your words and ways, your actions and purposes, your crosses and losses, redound to His praise. The highest seraph can have no higher or nobler end than this – the glory of the God before whom he cast his crown.

But he has a claim on you, which He has not on the unredeemed angel. "He gave Himself for you!" This mightiest of all boons which Omnipotence could give, is the guarantee for the bestowment of all lesser necessary blessings, and for the withholding of all unnecessary trials. While you are called to behold "His glory, the glory as of the only -begotten of the Father," remember its characteristic; it is not a glory to appall you by its splendors, but to win and captivate you by its beauties - it is "full of grace and truth." He is your God in covenant. "Underneath are the everlasting arms." You may compose yourself on your nightly pillow, with the sweet pledge of security, and say, "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 4:8

"I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night watches." – Psalm 63:6

Put all sorrow's wounds into His hand

(J. R. Miller, "By the Still Waters")

"He restores my soul." Psalm 23:3

In several ways does the shepherd restore his sheep.
If one wanders away, he goes out after it, and seeks
it until he finds it, restoring it to the shelter of the
fold. If one faints and grows sick by the way, in the
hard journey or the burning heat—the shepherd does
not leave it to die, but takes it up in his arms, and
carries it home, restoring it to the fold. If a sheep is
hurt, torn by a wild beast or injured by accident—the
shepherd tends its wounds until they are healed.

All this suggests how our Good Shepherd restores our
souls. Sometimes we wander away. It is very easy to
drift off from Christ. The drifting is often unconscious
—we do not realize that we are losing our first love—
and little by little, we are far off from Christ. Perhaps
it is a cherished sin which eats out our heart-life. Or
perhaps it is a worldly companionship which draws us
away, loosening the bonds which bound us to Christ.
Sometimes it is an absorbing business which leaves
no room for God. Or it may be the cares of this world
which choke the Word and quench the Spirit. We often
need to have our soul restored, quickened, revived—or
we would never get safely home, through this evil world.

Then, what soul is not sometimes hurt, wounded,
torn—by the wild beasts of temptation? Sin is a
fearful thing. It wounds the soul—and no hand but
Christ's can restore it. But if we put our hurt life
into His hand, He will give healing. What millions
of sin's woundings—has our Good Shepherd cured!

Then, when sorrow has left the heart broken, it is
only the Good Shepherd who can restore it. He is
a most skillful physician. We may put all sorrow's
wounds into His hand. He is most gentle, and His
hand is infinitely skillful. He is a wonderful comforter.
No human hand can heal a heart that is bruised—but
the hand of Jesus has infinite delicacy and skill.

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up
 their wounds. Psalm 147:3

I had a dream(vision like) last night and( "REV 4:8 NKJ)kept flashing just like your the cross verse that you put up but it was flashing..look it up OK
got to go Love in Jesus Def.
as i listen to the KJV on DVD and read at the same time i was looking at a other version "it is blasphemous what they leave out or change.
check Job 5:24 (KJV) with the (NRSV version) that is just one  example of the verses that hit me.to me it is a profound sin against the Word of God.
the same with the Gospel according to John Luke Matthew Mark so much difference...and the letters of John   Acts (the whole thing) compare with the( King James version) it is blasphemous
If it was not for the King James Bible I would not have received Christ as my saviour because they don't have the Truth  they lie..bye bye Tom

Hello Sister Def,

YES - I understand completely now. I got a reading of the New Testament from James Earl Jones on CD for Christmas. I look forward to doing the same thing you are doing. James Earl Jones has a beautiful deep voice and other qualities that make listening to him very pleasant. This set also has music and graphics, so I expect it to be a nice experience.

Sister, I tried having computer generated voices reading the Bible to me, but most of them are very robotic and hard to listen to for very long. I'm not familiar with Stephen Johnston, but I do know that many people with pleasant voices have recorded Bible readings. I'll be finding out soon how nice it is to lean back, relax, and listen to the Bible being read.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Ephesians 1:18-23 NASB I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
Grabe a pencil and paper ,It is always gold digging.PUT HEADPHONE IN YOUR EARS,be attentive
The voice does not mean anyting,Tom ,it is the word that comes to your ears that counts
I dont think you will be relaxing cause the word of God is alive,Full of Power will move your inside.
And believe me it will move you
 everytime with some new finding
GLORY to the Word Of God...
Lord be with You Tom
Love in Jesus Def.see you in my Spirit.
""So then faith cometh by hearing,
and hearing by the word of God.(Romans 10:17)

Results of Religious Compromise

"And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD" (II Chronicles 19:2).

Jehoshaphat was a godly king of Judah who faithfully served the Lord, but he made the tragic mistake of forming an alliance with ungodly king Ahab of Israel in fighting against their common enemy Syria. After all, he reasoned, they were "brothers," both descended from Abraham, so they could join together in battling the Syrians.

As a result, although God continued to bless Jehoshaphat during his lifetime, this compromise eventually resulted in great tragedy in his family when his son and successor, Jehoram, married Ahab's wicked daughter Athaliah and then slew all his own brothers, and soon he himself died of a loathsome disease (II Chronicles 21:4,6,19).

The road of compromise eventually ends in a precipice, especially in matters regarding the integrity of God's word and His saving gospel. The timeless principle for Christians today is given in II Corinthians 6:14,15: "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? . . . or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?"

This warning and command is at least as greatly needed today as it was in Paul's day. Spiritual, moral, and religious compromise seem to be endemic in the Christian realm today, in both doctrine and practice, and God would warn us that tragedy is imminent in the generation of our children if not before.

"Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing" (II Corinthians 6:17).
Hi Pastor Roger
Right now I am at in my study of the WORD
2 Chronicles 16:9
For the  eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth,
to shew Himself strong in the behalf of Them whose heart Is perfect toward Him.
Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
2 Chronicles 16:9 KJV

Hello Sister Def,

That sounds like a huge job. I'm not real sure about what you're doing. Do you mean that you are making a new translation from the ancient languages, or are you recording the Bible in your own voice? I'm a little bit confused. Regardless, we'll miss you. Take a break from time to time and come holler at us.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Yes it is a big job of good will, and patience, but a work of love to hear in my ears(cause I listen to it with  wierlesshead phones so that i don't miss one syllable)the world and works and Love of God our Father
that brings me to mention right now(FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD JN 3:16 )and so on..

1 Chronicles 1:19 "and unto Eber were born two sons:
 the name of the one was Peleg;because in  his days the earth was divided;
and his brother's name was Joktan.
Well brother Tom I hope you understand now my walk with God that I am doing right now
it is nothing new to me anymore because the WORD is my life my blood His Blood
but it is always for me a new understanding cause the word speak new to me all the time
GLORY GLORY TO THE SON OF GOD

I have put it on cassettetape too so so i could listen to it when i leave the house
25 years ago i recorded the french version of the King James bible on 150 cassette of ½hours that is when God visited me
I told Him(God) that i had never read His book(the Bible) but that I would do it.
and not only that ,but record it at the same time, and if He had anyting to make me
understand, to do it ,that when I come face to face whit Him when I die It would be His fault if I did understand.and i was very serious.

Hello Sister Eva,

I'm positive that competitive cheerleading counts, but you're going to have to help me out with the other one. I'll have to confess that I don't know what "Orachtas" is. I'm an older guy, and I don't know what some of the new stuff is. As an example, had no idea what an "Ipod" was until just recently, but we do have indoor plumbing and electricity.   Grin

Grin  All I know is that you pull up and down on a handle and water comes out. With electricity, you get a pretty glass jar on the side of the house with a little wheel that goes round and round, and you get a bill for watching the wheel go around.   Grin

I don't know how to dance, and it's really a pretty good trick just to walk on some days. However, I do watch some dancing on television and some of the local square dancing and clogging from time to time. I have watched folks River-Dance on television, but it looks like square-dancing and clogging would be more fun. Most of the competitions we have locally are for clogging, and it's a lot of fun to watch.

I'm just shy of 59, and I know that many of the young folks on the forum would consider this to be ancient.   Grin   I'll just say that I'm young at heart, but I would need an overhaul and frame-straightening if I was a car.   Grin
